Officer Anthony Lopresto On December 7, 1986 at approximately 0210 hours, Officer Anthony Lopresto was shot with a .410 shotgun in the side and foot as he responded to a domestic disturbance call. Officer John Bennett responded and ultimately shot the suspect.

Lieutenant Daniel Lyons On October 4, 1990 at approximately 0320 hours, Officer Daniel Lyons had just left an Extra Duty detail and was attempting to drive home. He was shot in the back of the head by a .22 caliber rifle from nearby bushes.

Sergeant Mark Townsend On August 29, 1993 at approximately 1800 hours, Sergeant Mark Townsend, along with other officers, were attempting to arrest a subject for an armed robbery. The suspect shot at the officers as he fled on foot with a 9mm handgun, striking Sergeant Townsend in the knee incapacitating him.

Officer Mark Mcgowan On August 30, 1994 at approximately 0230 hours, Officer Mark Mcgowan unknowingly walked in on an armed robbery in progress at a convenience store. Officer Mcgowan fought with one of the suspects attempting to take him into custody. In doing so, the suspect was able to stab the officer in the back. The officer was able to shoot the suspect to avoid further injury.

Officer Michael Vigil and Sergeant Kevin Howell On March 23, 1995 at approximately 2200 hours, several robbery suspects were being pursued in a vehicle. After they crashed, the primary suspect began fleeing on foot armed with an SKS rifle. Officer’s Michael Vigil and Kevin Howell ran after him. The suspect fired the rifle several times, striking Officers Vigil and Howell, striking them numerous times, and critically wounding them both.

Officer John Touchton On November 26, 1995 at approximately 0405 hours, Officer John Touchton observed a suspect, and several others, gambling in the street. He attempted to arrest the suspect who fled on foot. When the officer caught him, the suspect shot the officer two times with a .38 caliber revolver at close range.

Officers Larry Mitchell and R.D. Pemberton On January 15, 2002 at approximately 2337 hours, Officers’ Larry Mitchell and R.D. Pemberton were attempting to arrest the driver of a vehicle they had stopped. As the officers fought with the subjects, they were shot with a 9mm pistol several times at close range.

Officer Matt Smith On March 6, 2004 at approximately 1303 hours, Officer Matt Smith was at the suspect's residence in reference to determining if she met "Baker Act" criteria. The suspect armed herself with a kitchen knife and attacked Office Smith. She stabbed the officer in the neck before he was able to shot the suspect.

Officer Brian Trlak On November 27, 2005 at approximately 0200 hours, Officer Trlak was attempting to arrest a suspect on a pick up order for aggravated battery that had occurred earlier. As he and his sergeant approached the car the suspect was sitting in, he began shooting at Officer Trlak with a .38 caliber revolver, striking him once in the chest.

Officer James Wilkinson On May 26, 2006 at approximately 0300 hours, Officer Wilkinson conducted a stop on a motorist for a traffic violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, the driver shot Officer Wilkinson in the chest with a .357 magnum revolver.

Officer John Armao On May 11, 2007 at approximately 0613 hours Officer John Armao went to a residence with a bail bondsman and other officers to arrest the suspect on a warrant. While checking the residence, the suspect shot Officer Armao with a .44 caliber handgun striking him in the face and right shoulder.

 

 

The Purple Shield is presented to any sworn employee who in the line of duty suffers death, an extreme physical or permanent injury or is wounded to the extent that the injury or would is life changing. The death, injury or wound must have been sustained as a direct result of a weapon used against the officer while taking police action.
