PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The City of Tampa is designing a 0.7-mile extension of New Tampa Boulevard to bridge I-75 and connect southward to the newly built Commerce Park Boulevard. The purpose of the New Tampa Boulevard improvement is to provide a direct connection to the Liberty Middle School and Freedom High School, City of Tampa park and other local businesses and residences currently under construction. The majority of students attending the new schools will use this new bridge and roadway. Sidewalks and pedestrian connections will ensure safe passage along the roadway and across the I-75 bridge. The two-lane roadway will be built with a five-foot sidewalk on its south-side and an eight-foot sidewalk on its north-side. This New Tampa Boulevard extension should provide a great deal of relief on Bruce B. Downs for local users.

Early in the design process, an Overpass Proposal Report was required by both the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The purpose of the study was to ensure a safe crossing of the I-75 envelope and to protect the surrounding/adjacent environment. Due to its collaborative nature and timely results, New Tampa Boulevard study has set a precedent for future studies of this type.
