NOT A CROSS WORD I met John several times during the year- always on a bench on Kennedy and always working on a crossword. He told me he attended Marquette University. I believe him! He was so well spoken and we had wonderful conversations. We discussed college basketball; I’m a UNC fan. Of course we talked about photography. He asked me who my favorite photographer was but quickly added, “I hope it is not Ansel Adams, that’s what everyone says.”  I told him I admired the FSA photographers of the 30s & 40s. “Like Dorothea Lange?” he replied. I am sure the shock was evident on my face. Most people do not know what the FSA is nor do they know the names of the photographers. Some people will recognize images but that is about it. I was impressed.

John explained he wrote “Homeless, Bless You” on his t-shirt because in Tampa you cannot hold up a sign that is soliciting. He has a kind voice and I enjoyed our talks.
