Casitas built
between 1895 and the early 1900s for cigar workers' families
were among the earliest structures in Ybor City. The
houses rented for $1.50 to $2.50 and payments were deducted
from the worker's wages. Tampa Poet Silvia Curbelo
wrote the following poem which is on the piece:
The Coarse, gritty feel of the leaves
is music in my fingers,
a story I tell over and over,
slowly, like a man in love.
My hands move through a day's wages.
