March's Guest Author is Dennis Lehane

Dennis Lehane and Mayor Iorio

Mayor Iorio’s guest on the March episode of “Mayor’s Book Talk” is multi-award winning novelist, Dennis Lehane.  After much acclaim as a crime fiction writer, Lehane turned to history and politics in his 700-page epic, The Given Day.    The two discuss this tremendous historic novel, which is centered on the events before and during the Boston police strike of 1919. In May 2005, Lehane was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Eckerd College, his alma mater, and was appointed to Eckerd's Board of Trustees later that year. Lehane was born in Boston, Massachusetts, which provides the setting for many of his books.

Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer

Miranda's disbelief turns to fear in a split second when a meteor knocks the moon closer to the earth. How should her family prepare for the future when worldwide tsunamis wipe out the coasts, earthquakes rock the continents, and volcanic ash blocks out the sun? As summer turns to Arctic winter, Miranda, her two brothers, and their mother retreat to the unexpected safe haven of their sunroom, where they subsist on stockpiled food and limited water in the warmth of a wood-burning stove. Told in journal entries, this is the heart-pounding story of Miranda's struggle to hold on to the most important resource of all-hope-in an increasingly desperate and unfamiliar world.
Susan Beth Pfeffer is the author of many books for teens, including The Dead and The Gone, the companion novel to Life As We Knew It, and the bestselling novel
The Year Without Michael.  Susan lives in Middletown, New York.
