Flood Zone Terminology
| FW (Floodway) |
An area that
includes the channel of a river or other watercourse and the adjacent land areas that must
be reserved in order to discharge the base flood without cumulatively increasing the
water-surface elevation by more than a designated height. (Note: this area is normally in
Zone AE.) |
| EASE (Flowage
Easement Area) |
An area within a
community, usually bordering a stream, that has more restrictive floodplain development
criteria imposed upon it by the governing body (town, city, etc.) than the criteria
imposed as a prerequisite to participation in the NFIP. (Note: Unlike the floodway, this
area may overlap any other flood zone.) |
| STATE (State
Encroachment Area) |
An area within a
community, usually bordering a stream, that has more restrictive floodplain development
criteria imposed upon it by the state, than the criteria imposed as a prerequisite to
participation in the NFIP. (Note: Unlike the floodway, this area may overlap any other
flood zone.) |
