Thom
Snelling was selected as the Deputy Director for the department of Growth
Management and Development Services in February, 2006. Mr. Snelling has been
with the City of Tampa since 1992 serving as the manager for Land Development
Coordination prior to his promotion.
In addition to his duties as Deputy Director, he was designated as the City's
first 'Green Officer' by Mayor Pam Iorio in April, 2008.
As Green Officer, his primary responsibilities were to ensure that the City of
Tampa reached its goal of becoming a Certified Florida Green Local Government by
October of 2010; a goal that was met in March 2009, and to coordinate programs
that will help the City fulfill its commitment to the U.S. Mayor’s Climate
Protection Agreement. Mr. Snelling will work continually to advance the use of
green building and development techniques and establish sustainable practices
throughout the city.
Snelling is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio and holds a Master of Arts
degree from the University of South Florida in Urban Anthropology and Urban
Studies. Prior to his employment with the City of Tampa, Mr. Snelling worked for
the City of Fort Myers Planning Department focusing on land use, zoning and
comprehensive planning. He also has private sector planning experience with a
focus on developments of regional impact, zoning and land development
regulations and is a member of the American Planning Association
