Information ResourcesOur 17th Annual Celebration was held in the beautiful, historic Tampa Theatre on October 18, 2005. The event featured Master of Ceremonies Tedd Webb, 970 WFLA Radio Personality. This year's Keynote Speaker was Richard Gonzmart of the Famous Columbia Restaurant - The event was taped by CTTV (City of Tampa Television-Channel 15) with additional broadcastings aired throughout the month of October. Entertainment by the fabulous vocals of Melanie Rose and the beautiful Columbia Restaurant Flamenco Dancers. The Highlight of the event was a $40,000 Check Presentation by the Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committee to USF for our Latino Scholarship Funds that will actually allow for the State to match the total of $100,000 commitment. Tampa City Council Member Mary C. Alvarez, City Employees, Hillsborough County School Children from DeSoto Elementary, West Tampa Elementary, Villa Madonna, and Wharton High School including several Senior Citizens all enjoyed attending the Celebration. Event-goers enjoyed a free Lunch compliments of the Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Committee that included Mr. Empanada's, a bag of Chifle's Plantain Chips and a bottle of City of Tampa Water at the end of the program. Because of our sponsors, in 1994 we established an annual scholarship award program. In 2000 and 2001, we established two separate $10,000.00 Scholarship Endowments at the University of South Florida. This committee has challenged itself to increase the number and amount of Scholarship awards again this year. The MHHC also has Scholarships available at Hillsborough Community College. We are truly a "grassroots", hard-working Committee, and there continues to be so much that we would like to do, and so many lives that we would like to touch. "Together, I know that we can meet this challenge and make a difference", Adri Colina, MHHC member and CTTV Host of ¿Que Pasa Tampa? In addition to the Scholarship awards, this committee has also mentored many at-risk Hispanic youths from local Elementary, Middle and High Schools. For the past few years, we have coordinated and hosted a Holiday Celebration (with food and toys) for the students at Desoto Elementary School. Without our help, many of these children would not have had any holiday celebration. Join us for our annual Latin Fest while we give back to our Hispanic Community.
