What is Accreditation?
In 1989, the Commission for Accreditation of
Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) was formed, and the standards for national
accreditation in the field of parks and recreation were finalized. The 155
standards identified for parks and recreation covering
all operations contained in leisure services. These professional standards
allow the
agency to measure its effectiveness and efficiency in meeting the leisure and
recreation needs of its constituents. Accreditation supports our agency’s goal of
being more accountable to taxpayers while improving the delivery of recreational
services.
Accreditation means that the agency has met
the 155 professional standards covering all aspects of the operation of a public
park and recreation agency. The standards are organized into 10 categories:
- Agency Authority, Role and
Responsibility
- Planning
- Organization and Administration
- Human Resources
- Fiscal Policy and Management
- Program and Services Management
- Facility and Land Use Management
- Safety and Security
- Risk Management
- Evaluation and Research
By engaging in the self-assessment component of the accreditation process,
the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department will increase efficiency and
effectiveness in the provision of programs and services and will enhance its
service to our citizens.
Benefits of Accreditation

There are over 5,000 parks and recreation agencies
throughout the U.S., currently only 71 of those agencies are accredited. Tampa
will join this elite group and become number 72!
