Park Improvement Projects
The Parks and Recreation Department carry out many projects to improve park facilities, promote public safety, and enhance the aesthetics of the park facilities for the overall enjoyment of our residents. The Department's Planning, Design and Natural Resources Team is responsible for park planning, parkland acquisition, park master planning, and the design and development of new - or renovation of existing - neighborhood, community and regional parks, greenways and trails, and open space throughout the City.

New Tampa Nature Park - Phase I construction is underway and scheduled for completion in August 2011. The initial phase includes the construction of a one-half mile long entrance drive, parking for 20 cars, a one-half mile long asphalt trail that connects to the adjacent Hillsborough County Flatwoods Park trail system, a wetland overlook boardwalk, and additional mulched hiking trails. Additional improvement scheduled for 2012 include a restroom, storage building, additional trail construction, additional overlook elements, and play elements. A nature center will be constructed at a later date, to be determined.
Ballast Point Park Master Plan - The renovations and extension to the boat ramp at Ballast Point Park were completed this fiscal year, which concludes Phase I of the park Master Plan. Construction on Phase II of the Master Plan is scheduled to begin in September and includes new circular and connecting walkways, open lawn for play, additional picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills, benches; a tot lot with shade sail; a shade sail on existing play structure; a splash pad; patio on back of Joe Abrahams Fitness & Wellness center and new patio furniture.
