TPD Marine Unit

The Tampa Police Department Marine Unit and
Dive Team are responsible
for law enforcement and rescue activities on the waterways in and around
the City of Tampa. The Unit also assists the United States Coast Guard
and United States Customs and Border Protection
with "Homeland Security" with illegal narcotic interdiction in the port.. The City of Tampa has a diverse,
marine environment that varies in extreme depth changes, tidal and river
currents and a wide variety of weather conditions. Tampa Bay is
approximately 398 square miles and surrounds the City of Tampa, which is
intersected by the Hillsborough River that runs through the city. Tampa is
also home to the eighth largest seaport in the United States and numerous recreational
boating marinas. The City of Tampa also hosts Carnival, Holland America,
and Royal Caribbean
Cruise Lines.

The Donzi is the cutting edge of marine law enforcement with a
gyro-stabilized camera system that is designed for the marine
environment. The camera has a triple sensor (day/night/infra-red) system
with broadcast quality. This system is capable of real time down link
broadcast to all district systems, the mobile command post and a mobile
response vehicle.

The Marine Unit provides boating education to the public,
monitors and patrols the navigable waters within Tampa City limits and
assists other bureaus within the Tampa Police Department, and other law
enforcement agencies with water related investigations and activities.
They patrol 68 linear square miles of shoreline in tamp Bay and the
Hillsborough River. They handle emergency call such as boaters in distress, sinking vessels
or vessel fires. They routinely search for missing boats or
persons around the shoreline. Marine officers enforce all State
and Local boating laws and regulations as well as perform safety
inspections of vessels within their area of responsibility.
The Marine Unit and
Dive Team work hand in hand. All of the members of the
Marine Unit are primary divers. To accomplish their assignment,
the Marine Unit is staffed by one sergeant, One corporal, and 4 full
time officers. Most members of the Team are either Instructor or Dive
Master certified.
