2009 Bell/Childers Memorial Awardee Jay PrunerJay Pruner has been a prosecutor in Tampa for over 22 years working closely with law enforcement.  He worked as a staff attorney for the Louisiana Supreme Court before beginning his career as an Assistant State Attorney.  Jay has worked his way through the ranks, and for the last seven years has been Chief of the Major Crimes Division.  Jay has been a champion for the Tampa Police Department, working side by side with the Homicide Division for over eleven years going to countless homicide scenes – always willing to respond in the middle of the night, on weekends and holidays.

Jay has prosecuted numerous cases including Antonio Neal who was sentenced to life in prison for the Attempted Murders of Officers Mike Vigil and Kevin Howell.  Jay convicted Lawrence Singleton of the murder of Roxanne Hayes.  Singleton had raped Mary Vincent and cut off her arms in California.  Jay convinced Ms. Vincent to come to Florida and testify in the penalty phase of the case securing a death sentence.  Jay’s hard work and dedication also led to the conviction of Paula Gutierrez for the homicide of Officer Lois Marrero.  Jay’s most recent homicide conviction was last month when he prosecuted Stanley Telfare for the murder of Elalia Walker.

However, one of Jay’s most memorable trials was that of Terrol Sanders who shot Mr. and Mrs. Valdez as they slept in their home.  Jay worked closely with his friend, Detective Ricky Childers, for many months investigating this case.  That was Detective Childers’ last trial.
