 Since
1895 there have been 31 Tampa Police Officers killed in
the line of duty. These honorable names shall never be forgotten. They are our history.
They have made the ultimate sacrifice for thecitizens of Tampa.
Since the first recorded police death in 1792, there have
been more than 17,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
The
National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.
bears the names of more than 14,000 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who
have been killed in the line of duty. During 2007, 186 police officers across
America have been lost in the performance of their duties, compared with 145 police
officers in 2006.
On average, one police officer is killed in the line of duty every
53 hours. More than 56,000 law enforcement officers are assaulted each year,
resulting in over 16,000 injuries annually.
