Funding the Riverwalk

The Tampa Riverwalk-Opening the River to the People



The immediate objective of the Tampa Riverwalk Project (Phase I) is to make a continuous 1.8 mile connection from the new Tampa Bay History Center to the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Having seven segments completed or under construction, the City of Tampa and the Friends of the Riverwalk, in a 50/50 partnership, are committed to raising the money needed for the final segments.  The City funding has come from the Local Option Gas Tax, not ad valorem (property) taxes.  However, City funds will not be enough.  Planners are pursuing every source of funding to include grants, state funds, federal funds and private donations through a capital campaign.  The specific goals by category are provided in the table below.
