1st PLACE - To be featured on the T-SHIRT:
CHOOSE TO RECYCLE Trash and more trash, without a tree in sight, That’s how the world is going to be unless we make it right. It’s not very hard – we need to know how, And we better hurry because we have to start now!
One plastic bag not properly disposed, Takes about 1,000 years to completely decompose. Each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, It’s so easy to help the world, plus it’s free!
Every year Americans throw away more than 200 million tires, When we need to recycle them, it is what the Earth desires. Cardboard, aluminum, glass and steel… These items to be recycled are ideal.
Recycling can make your old things into something new. I can do it and so can you. Make time to do your part. Choose to RECYCLE… be smart!
Poet: Megan Ellinghausen (Grade 6) “Choose to Recycle School: Ben Hill Middle Teacher: Holly Salmon Principal: Barry Davis 2nd PLACE STYLISH RECYCLING Make something beautiful Out of what would have been trash. Yesterday’s newspaper Can be a hat in a flash! With gift bags you can cover books You will get admiring looks. Buy a recycled cloth bag in your favorite shade It will look great, even when the colors fade! Soda can tops can be a handbag Instead of a purse that is plain as a rag. Buy some used clothing at a second hand store And donate some clothes from when you were four. Now I hope that you can see How to recycle in Style – just like me!
Poet: Colleen Davis (Grade 7) “Stylish Recycling” School: Lee Academy Teacher: Melissa Tremmel Principal: Linda Lacey 3rd PLACE JAMAR’S ENVIRONMENTAL POEM I once thought what I did didn’t matter at all, But then I found out the world was quite small. The whole world is affected by the actions I take, I never knew what a difference one person could make.
If we could all turn off just one light, We could save the planet from its plight. If we turn off the water every once in a while, We help our planet keep its smile.
Earth is the only home that we know, If we destroy it there’s no place else for us to go. The ozone layer is rapidly depleting, Our life-giving sun might just kill us through heating.
So think about the consequences of the actions you take, And remember the difference one person can make…
Poet: Jamar Shipley (Grade 8) “Jamar’s Environmental Poem” School: Tomlin Middle Teacher: Virginia Wong Principal: Susan Sullivan
