Ragan Community Auditorium originally dedicated on
February 20, 1943 named for R.L. Ragan member of the Board of
Representatives District 10. The Auditorium was a favorite spot for elegant
parties in the local community, accommodating 150 people with 20 tables and
150 folding chairs.
Fire destroyed the Auditorium in April 1997,
displacing the Hillsborough
County Senior Citizen Program. No lives were lost but they were certainly
changed. Due to the City's determination to rebuild, a new larger center
rose from the ashes.
Construction of the new center started almost 2 ½ years later. The
Parks and Recreation Department installed an updated irrigation system to keep the newly
planted landscape healthy. The new Ragan Community Center was rededicated
June 20, 2001. The project cost $763,000 increasing both the size of the center
(to 6,600-sq. ft.) and the occupancy limits (to 200 people). New chairs, tables,
public address and sound systems were purchased as a part of the project.
