You can take an active role in protecting your property from minor flood damage.  The method you choose depends on your particular situation, the intensity of an impending storm, and your property's propensity for flooding.  Understand that sandbagging alone typically is not an effective method to protect a structure from minor flooding.  Sandbags used in conjunction with a home that has had its openings properly waterproofed will provide a stronger defense to flooding occurrences.

Caulking is one of the most effective methods designed to  keep water out of your home.  Latex, Tub & Tile, and Silicone caulking works fairly well to protect a structure from flooding, however, it requires between eight (8) to twenty four (24) hours to cure to a surface.  For best results please check manufacturers' recommended curing times on the product label.  Window seals, door jambs, and other exterior openings should be properly caulked to maximize waterproofing efforts.

Duct tape and expanding polyurethane foam work as well as caulk products, but the surface needs to be very clean, dry, and smooth in order for the tape and foam to stick onto the surface. Both of these products require plastic sheeting to be installed on the side exposed to potential floodwaters as a means of keeping water out of your home.

Sandbagging used in conjunction with a home that has had openings properly fortified will provide a strong defense against minor flooding.
