Summer Art Camp
Open your child’s eyes to art! This summer, art campers will explore a variety of styles and movements in art and participate in exciting hands-on art making experiences including clay, sculpture, painting, drawing and decorative arts. Summer Art Camp projects are based on learning the method and media of making art in the creative environment of the Tampa Museum of Art. Your child will gain a greater appreciation and understanding of art, as well as be able to develop his or her own talent for self-expression. General InformationWeeks 1 – 5 are for students ages 6 –10, week 6 for students ages10 –14. Snacks will be provided during each morning and afternoon session. Students enrolled for a full day of camp will enjoy a supervised lunch and recreation period. Students enrolled for a full day are required to bring a brown bag lunch. Parents will be sent information about drop-off and pick-up, and other details prior to the start of Summer Art Camp. Due to the popularity of the program, all classes require advance registration and payment. Schedule of ClassesAGES 6-10 ONLY Week One: June 16 – 20 Fiber Arts See how modern fibers come alive in the form of fabric collage, colored silk, and mixed media weavings. Children will learn how the textures and patterns found in fiber can become an important element of their own personal artistic creations. This class corresponds with the exhibition Small Expressions, on display at TMA from April 19 – July 6, and Convergence 2008, the International Fiber Arts Conference held in Tampa from June 25 – 28, 2008. Week Two: June 23 – 27 Art in the Third Dimension Make art that can be viewed from multiple sides and angles. Unlike a drawing or painting, three-dimensional art changes depending on how it's viewed. Children will have fun learning basic math principles while making art that looks great from every direction. Week Three: July 7 – 11 Art and Culture - from Ancient to Modern From the columns of ancient Greece to the brick buildings in our own backyard, this class will explore the art, architecture and styles of ancient societies, and how they have evolved to what we know today. Students will design architectural structures, moving vehicles and clothing while drawing upon historical and modern influences. Week Four: July 14 – 18 It’s Not Easy Being Green Environmental art improves our relationship with the world around us. Make art from natural and recycled materials while learning about the work of famous environmental artists, such as Andy Goldsworthy. Discover how to make great artwork that is also kind to the environment. This class corresponds with the exhibition It’s Not Easy Being Green on display at the Tampa Museum of Art from July 11–September 28, 2008. Week Five: July 21 – 25 Drawing and Painting Learn techniques that will help your child paint and draw like the masters! Children will learn about art elements such as color, line, value and shape and see how mastery of these elements can truly transform their artwork from ordinary to extraordinary.
