In 2003 the
City
of Tampa, Public Art Program developed “The
Big Picture Photographer Laureate Program.” Each year the Public Art Program
commissions a photojournalist, documentary photographer, or fine art
photographer to explore and photograph life and the crucial issues and events
within the city of Tampa for one year. Each photographer chosen for the project
adds his or her own chapter to this multi-year documentation. Steven S. Gregory
served as the
2006 Photographer Laureate, and constructed digital images capturing Tampa’s
unique details.
Gregory’s artistic process is as interesting as the resulting images. Working
early in the morning and just before sunset, the artist searches for shifting
light and its transforming effect on textures, shadows, and colors. He then
supplements this already beautiful lighting with artificial light, dramatically
altering the scene. Then, using a computer, he scans and combines the dramatic
skies and unusual objects he originally captured with a digital camera into
unique images that invoke the feeling and emotion of the subjects. Gregory’s
stunning chapter to “The Big Picture” project can be viewed as a group for the
first time in this special exhibition, which is organized by the Tampa Museum of
Art in conjunction with the City of Tampa Public Art Program.
