Why Have a Strategic Plan?
Strategic planning is a management tool to help an organization do a better job. The strategic planning process focuses an organizationís energy to ensure that employees are working toward the same goals and to assess and adjust the organization's direction in response to a changing environment. In short, strategic planning is a disciplined effort to produce fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, what it does, and why it does it, with a focus on the future. City of Tampa Strategic Plan
The strategic plan identifies a long-range vision articulated by six strategic focus areas. Each year employees and management teams work to complete action plans to move towards achievement of that vision.
Annual Strategic Planning
The strategic planning process is ongoing and cyclical. It includes long-range planning, program development, business planning, performance evaluation and integration of feedback to continually align services to meet the vision. The process begins by defining the mission and values, then developing the vision. From that vision, the City establishes priorities, known as strategic focus areas. In each of these areas, goals and measurable objectives are set to ensure the process remains on track. Finally, specific tasks or actions are identified to guide budgeting decisions.
