PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 40th Street/McKinley Drive corridor is a north/south urban
arterial corridor located between 30th Street on the west and
56th Street on the east. The limits of the approximately 4.2
miles long project are from Hillsborough Avenue (S.R.
600/U.S.92) to Fowler Avenue (S.R. 582). (See graphic below)
The 40th Street/McKinley Drive corridor is a two-lane rural
roadway and includes a two-lane bridge across the Hillsborough
River.
For all five phases (Segments A-E) the widening project will provide for roadway, stormwater, water and wastewater improvements, street lighting, sidewalks, bicycle lanes, bus shelters and bus bays, three roundabouts, a traffic signal at River Grove, landscaping in the medians, border areas, and roundabouts, and a new four-lane bridge structure over the Hillsborough River. The new 40th Street bridge will feature enhanced aesthetics. This 40th Street Corridor Enhancement Project will increase vehicle capacity and help to improve both motorist and pedestrian safety on 40th Street. Construction was completed in January 2005 on Segment E and in July 2005 for Segment D. Construction is completed on Segment B while Segment C just started construction, with a proposed completion date of June 2010. Please see the 40th Street Progress Reports button for the estimated construction completion dates. The construction contract for Segment C was awarded to John Carlo, Inc. at a total project cost of $5.1 million. Access to commercial businesses, residences and local roads will be maintained during construction. 40th Street is a major gateway to Busch Boulevard, Adventure Island, the University of South Florida, and two regional medical hospitals. Improving 40th Street will provide a more efficient route to these destinations and help alleviate congestion and improve safety for pedestrians and motorists.
The project is divided into five phases, Segments A - E. Please click on the map to the left for more information about each segment.
