City of Tampa Wastewater Department

The City of Tampa's Wastewater Department receives and treats wastewater collected from the Tampa area and surrounding suburbs. On an average day, more than 50 million gallons of raw sewage flow into the Howard F. Curren Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (AWTP). This raw sewage is treated to an advanced level that meets or exceeds federal regulations, including National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System standards (NPDES). Historically, the AWTP’s discharge effluent levels have remained well below established requirements.

The AWTP’s discharge effluent flows into lower Tampa Bay where it is regarded by environmentalists as extremely beneficial to plant and marine life by providing a daily fresh influx of water. We are continually changing our processes and upgrading the AWTP to better serve the community and protect the environment.  The AWTP uses a state certified on-site laboratory to provide sample analysis to meet federal, state, and local permit and regulatory requirements. We also have on-site an Industrial Pre-treatment staff that monitors wastewater generated by industrial uses to ensure their discharges will not interrupt our treatment process once it has entered the AWTP.

The City of Tampa's Wastewater Department wants you to keep your pipes fat-free this holiday season.

·        Don't pour fats, oils, and greases down your drains.

·        Don't put anything in your toilet except human wastes and tissue paper.

·        Scrap excess foods directly into your trashcan before putting your dishes in the dishwasher.

·        Use your garbage disposal sparingly.

·        Do pour used cooking oils/sauces/gravies into a container and allow them to cool. After cooling they may be disposed of in your trashcan.

If you are experiencing a sewer back up or overflow call us immediately at 813-259-1693. This is a 24/7 number and someone is always at the other end of the line who can send a crew out to inspect your lines and find the problem. If it's in our pipes we'll take care of it at no charge to you. If it's in your pipes, we'll give you all the information you need before you call a plumber.

If you have additional questions or concerns about proper grease disposal please give us a call at 813-259-1693 or visit our website at Grease Ordinance
