Greater Tampa CERT - 2009 Year In Review

The main emphasis this year was on training ...

  • We had 5 basic CERT training classes and trained approximately 85 new members. One of the classes was a Spanish CERT class - the first one in the area. Special recognition to Eric Black and Familia Sana for coordinating the class.
  • We had one first responder class with approximately 22 members graduating. We were lucky enough to have Fire Chief Dennis Jones teach the class!

GT CERT members have been very active this year.  We have participated in several events including:

  • January:
    • TPD guest speaker, Sgt. Rick Ubinas, provided information about different trainings/skills for CERT
  • February:
    • medical refresher training
    • CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive) terrorism awareness training
    • CPR training
  • March:
    • Coastguard Auxillary presentation (special thanks to Bob Easterday)
    • Squiggy Adventure Race medical support
  • April:
    • CERT Jeopardy
    • Were ready to participate in mass casualty exercise but it was cancelled due to emerging influenza epidemic (important reminder that we always have to be ready for a variety of hazards, and this one is ongoing)
  • May:
    • Team Leader meeting with 100% attendance!!!
    • lecture on hurricane preparedness
    • MOSI Hurricane Preparedness Expo
  • June:
    • Rally Point exercise (almost 100% of the teams participated and exercised some alternate communications)
    • disaster health training
  • July:
    • TFR Hurricane Preparedness exercise - two assignments (1) backup comms and (2) assist TPD with their initial reentry exercise 18 volunteers participated with short notice on a weekday - special recognition - very proud that we can call on this group and they will be there? received excellent feedback from TPD.

    • Temple Terrace CERT expanded role in July 4th parade ? special recognition to Allison Livingston, fosters excellent teamwork.
  • August:
    • First Responder Training
    • Lutz team held a Triage and Search and Rescue drill - special recognition to Krystle Doherty who has been working very hard this year to develop her team.
  • September and October:
    • reentry training (special thanks to those who stepped in and helped out with the training)
  • November:
    • basic navigation training (special thanks to John Neuman)
  • December:
    • holiday party and volunteer awards
