One innovative approach to reduce the Citys potable water demands -- the South Tampa Area Reclaim (STAR) Project -- features the use of high quality reclaimed water from the Howard F. Curren Wastewater Treatment Facility to satisfy the water demands of high-volume irrigation users in South Tampa. In 1999, the STAR project evolved into a team effort between the Water Department and the Citys Wastewater Department. This joint venture completed several preliminary design efforts, including a financial feasibility analysis and a preliminary route study. Both departments have received favorable response from the public to the project through neighborhood meetings, communication with civic associations, and a public opinion survey. The final pipeline route is scheduled to be determined and final design initiated in 2000, along with the sign-up process for customers to reserve water services. |
