These programs, funded by grants or cooperative agreements with governments or private organizations, provide a wide variety of services including job training, tax assistance, assistance with important lawsuits being decided by the courts, and much more. The Neighborhood Watch concept centers on the community and police working together for the safety and protection of a neighborhood. It is an organization made up of citizens concerned about their neighborhood. Tampa Parks and Recreation Department operates the David Barksdale Senior Citizen Center offers programs and activities specifically designed for our older population. Activities include low impact aerobics, shuffleboard, cards, arts and crafts, language lessons, painting, entertainment and social dancing. Volunteer groups and other related organizations. The Crime Prevention Program is designed to increase the citizen's awareness of preventative tips and techniques on how to protect their home and/or business. The Solid Waste Special Services Division is responsible for providing collection to residents who have large bulky items, such as large household appliances and old furniture that are too large to be collected by the residential crews. Large quantities of brush that are too large to be collected by yard waste crews are picked up mechanically using a special boom truck and pay loader. This division abates debris from illegal dumpsites throughout the city. The Tampa Museum of Art is always looking for more dedicated volunteers in all departments. The Tampa Sister Cities Committee, Inc. is affiliated with Sister Cities International which was formed during President Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration. The purpose of Sister Cities was, and still is, to involve people and organizations at all levels of our society in personal diplomacy. Incorporated on July 12, 1967 as a non-profit corporation and defined in its articles of incorporation as a membership organization to foster better international understanding and cooperation through Sister City relationships. Citizens of Tampa who have a desire to become directly involved with another culture and want to share their culture by linking with a community in another country can join the Tampa Sister Cities Committee, Inc. and participate in the many affiliations' activities. Come experience a few of the Bay area's finest golf courses. These accommodating courses are open all year around to the public. Babe Zaharias, Rocky Point, and Roger's Park provide everything you need, including natural beauty and favorable weather. All three courses are challenging to a golfer at any level and are reasonably priced. In response to the growing number of older people and their diverse needs, the Older Americans Act of 1965 as Amended calls for a range of programs that offer services and opportunities for older Americans, especially those at risk of losing their independence. The Act established the Administration on Aging (AoA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which is headed by the Assistant Secretary for Aging in the Department.
AoA is the Federal focal point and advocate agency for older persons and their concerns. In this role, AoA works to heighten awareness among other Federal agencies, organizations, groups, and the public about the valuable contributions that older Americans make to the Nation and alerts them to the needs of vulnerable older people. Through information and referral and outreach efforts at the community level, AoA seeks to educate older people and their caregivers about the benefits and services available to help them. USA.gov Senior Citizen Resources provides information on a wide range of topics of particular interest to senior, including consumer protection, education, jobs, health, housing, age related laws, and travel. The City of Tampa sponsors a vision and dental program that provides, general dentistry, free eye exams and prescription glasses to qualified residents. The program, targeted to "moderate" income families, seeks to help those whose income is too high to qualify for public assistance. Water conservation information resources for citizens and educators, including a water usage calculator and activities for kids. The American Victory Mariners Memorial & Museum Ship is a unique and innovative maritime attraction aboard the World War II era merchant ship SS American Victory. Located near downtown Tampa and adjacent to the Florida Aquarium, the memorial creates a world-class museum depicting life aboard Victory and other classes of merchant ships during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Busch Gardens is a 335 acre African theme, family entertainment park. Adventure Island (next to Busch Gardens) features 36 acres of water recreation areas. The Tampa Convention Center is the city's major "meeting" place... the facility is recognized for the staff’s helpfulness and efficiency; the design and quality of exhibit space, conference and break-out rooms; its downtown water-front location; and outstanding food services The Florida Aquarium is a three-story, glass domed aquarium featuring exhibits related to Florida's ecosystem and aquatic habitats. The Henry B. Plant Museum displays furnishings and gilded art original to the former Tampa Bay Hotel; exhibits trace the history of the hotel and the Tampa area. The Lowry Park Zoo is home to more than 350 exotic animal species from around the world. The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is a science and technology center containing more than 200,000 square feet of exhibits and hands-on displays.
The Tampa Bay History Center displays artifacts, memorabilia, maps, military uniforms and photographs depicting life in the Tampa Bay region from past to present. The world-class Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center includes four theatres, a rehearsal hall, a banquet hall and in-house catering.
