Although there was an overall decrease in juvenile-related gun crime between 2022 and 2023, those involved with guns are at a significantly higher risk of injury or death, both to themselves and others. These incidents not only endanger the lives of innocent people but also represent a troubling national trend that we are committed to addressing in our hometown. Juveniles are more likely to make impulsive decisions and lack the experience to handle firearms safely. Additionally, the presence of a gun in a volatile situation can quickly escalate to tragedy, as evident on the night of October 29, 2023, and again on April 9, 2024.</p> <p>While the Tampa Police Department is dedicated to arresting those involved in gun crimes, preventing these incidents from happening in the first place should be a shared goal for every member of our community. Reducing access to guns from those who should not have them is a focus of our PROJECT: Locked &amp; Unloaded program, which provides free gun locks to responsible gun owners. In 2023, Tampa Police recovered almost 2,000 guns from the street. In the same year, 79% of all auto burglaries were to vehicles that were left unlocked. From those unlocked vehicles, 197 guns were stolen.</p> <p>The Tampa Police Department focuses on reducing crime and building relationships with community members and is equally committed to building trust and positive relationships with young people through educational programs, mentorship initiatives, and community events. Access to youth-focused outlets and mentorship include our School Resource Officer program, Bigs in Blue, Police Athletic League (PAL), Resources in Community Hope (RICH) House program, the TPD Youth Academy, the TPD Police Explorer program, the Chief’s Youth Advisory Council, and “Stay &amp; Play”, our partnership program with the City of Tampa Parks &amp; Recreation Department.</p> <p>We need the help of our community to further reduce, and ultimately prevent, gun crimes from occurring. We urge parents, guardians, role models, and mentors to secure firearms safely and keep them out of the reach of minors. Talk openly with your children about the dangers of guns and be aware of your child's activities and social circles. Report any suspicious activity to the police before there is a chance for violence to escalate.</p> <p>The safety of our community is our top priority. Law enforcement, parents, educators, social service providers, and all members of the community can create a safer environment for our youth, and, in the end, we will make Tampa safer, together. </p> <p>Lee Bercaw, Chief of Police<br /> Tampa Police Department</p> <p><strong>To view the Community Debrief:</strong> <a href="https://www.tampa.gov/document/community-debrief-mass-casualty-incident-october-29-2023-147016">https://www.tampa.gov/document/community-debrief-mass-casualty-incident-october-29-2023-147016</a></p> <p><strong>To  view the Chief’s address to the community</strong>: <a href="https://youtu.be/58VjIvymhNE?si=zY1ix5OSsqUXz4rD">https://youtu.be/58VjIvymhNE?si=zY1ix5OSsqUXz4rD</a></p> <p>A PDF version of the open letter is attached to the release.<br />  </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-04-10T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">04/10/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-tampa-police" hreflang="en">News Tampa Police</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-attachments field--type-file field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Attachments</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"> <span class="file file--mime-application-pdf file--application-pdf"> <a href="/sites/default/files/news-article/attachments/2024/chief_s_letter_mci_community_debrief.pdf" type="application/pdf">chief_s_letter_mci_community_debrief.pdf</a></span> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 10 Apr 2024 20:06:28 +0000 Verliz Williams p93571 (Police Department) 147051 at https://www.tampa.gov Tampa Police Identify Persons of Interest Following Shooting Near Armature Works https://www.tampa.gov/news/2024-04/tampa-police-identify-persons-interest-following-shooting-near-armature-works-147011 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Tampa Police Identify Persons of Interest Following Shooting Near Armature Works</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Verliz W. </span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-04-10T13:32:01-04:00" title="Wednesday, April 10, 2024 - 01:32 pm" class="datetime">Wed, 04/10/2024 - 01:32 pm</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p><span style="font-size:12pt"><span style="line-height:107%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif"><strong>Incident Date/Time:</strong> Approximately 4:08 p.m. on April 9, 2024</span></span></span></p> <p><span style="font-size:12pt"><span style="line-height:107%"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif"><strong>Incident Location:</strong> 1900 block of N. This allows the department to have more oversight on the construction process, and ultimately complete the work at a fraction of what it would cost to hire a third-party contractor.</p> <p>The highly skilled nine-person team is responsible for completing a variety of projects, from installing water meters to extending water mains. Since the crew began working in late 2023, the team has saved more than $400,000 in construction costs.</p> <p>“The City of Tampa is dedicated to revitalizing our water infrastructure and providing the best possible service to our customers,” <strong>said Mayor Jane Castor</strong>. “This team will enable us to complete more projects quickly and efficiently, stretching our dollars to the best extent possible.”</p> <p>In addition to reducing construction costs, the team will also:</p> <ul><li>Help with the City’s affordable housing goal by connecting housing developments to utility services quicker and cheaper.</li> <li>Expedite the completion of construction projects. </li> <li>Give the Tampa Water Department more oversight on specific infrastructure work.</li> </ul><p>Team members have a combined 90 years of experience in their field, as well as direct experience working on city infrastructure projects.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-04-08T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">04/08/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-general" hreflang="en">News General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-water-department" hreflang="en">News Water Department</a></div> </div> Mon, 08 Apr 2024 12:06:13 +0000 Robert Lockridge dp9q (Technology & Innovation) 146911 at https://www.tampa.gov Splash into Savings! The Tampa Water Department’s water conservation and outreach team will host a water conservation celebration outside the City Center at Hanna Avenue on Friday which all community members are invited. </p> <p><strong>Participants will walk away with free water-saving devices, easy-to-follow tips, and a chance to win Florida-native plants.  </strong></p> <p>Conserving water is especially crucial now. Last year, Tampa had to purchase water from Tampa Bay Water twice and like the rest of Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties, was put under the Modified Phase One Water Restrictions which limit irrigation to once-a-week. Thanks in part to the water conservation and outreach team’s efforts, water demand in the City is down more than 6 million gallons a day (MGD) since the once-a-week watering restrictions went into effect in December. Florida homeowners use, on average, 991 gallons of water every time they irrigate. Excessive irrigation is one of the leading water usage problems, and in many cases, accounts to up to 50% of a household's water use.</p> <p>On average, the city consumes about 82 million gallons a day, with each individual consuming approximately 100 gallons a day.</p> <p>“Conserving water is crucial to the future of Tampa,” said Rory Jones, Tampa Water Department Director. “Through action and education, we can reduce our water demand and ensure our water resources will last for generations to come.”   </p> <p>The department’s water conservation and outreach team actively works to reduce water use and protect our water resources all year round. Team members provide a variety of services to Tampa Water Department customers including:  </p> <p> </p> <ul><li><strong>Irrigation Evaluations:</strong> In 2023, the team performed approximately 160 irrigation evaluations at homes across the City of Tampa. On average, these one-on-one irrigation evaluations resulted in water savings of more than 9,000 gallons per household per month.  </li> <li><strong>Indoor Water Conservation Kits:</strong> Giving customers the tools they need to reduce their water use is crucial. Last year, team members distributed more than 1,150 indoor water conservation kits, which include leak detection tablets, shower heads, and water conservation information. Kits were linked to an average water savings of more than 2,900 gallons of water per residential household per month.  </li> <li><strong>Water Wise Rebates: </strong>The Tampa Water Department participates in the regional Tampa Bay Water Wise Rebate program. Last year, more than 190 residential customers received rebates for making water-efficient upgrades to their homes, like buying an EPA WaterSense-certified toilet.  </li> </ul><p>In addition to today’s water conservation celebration, team members regularly participate in community events, speak at neighborhood meetings and schools, as well as hold regular workshops. Education and outreach are essential to helping community members see the benefits of reducing water use.  </p> <p>For more information about the department’s water conservation and outreach team efforts, visit <a href="/SaveWater">tampa.gov/SaveWater</a>.  </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-04-04T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">04/04/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-general" hreflang="en">News General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-sustainability-resilience" hreflang="en">News Sustainability &amp; Resilience</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-water-department" hreflang="en">News Water Department</a></div> </div> Thu, 04 Apr 2024 18:03:00 +0000 Robert Lockridge dp9q (Technology & Innovation) 146856 at https://www.tampa.gov Head of Development and Economic Opportunity Announces Departure Later this Year https://www.tampa.gov/news/2024-04/head-development-and-economic-opportunity-announces-departure-later-year-146761 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Head of Development and Economic Opportunity Announces Departure Later this Year</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Robert L. </span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-04-04T08:19:32-04:00" title="Thursday, April 4, 2024 - 08:19 am" class="datetime">Thu, 04/04/2024 - 08:19 am</time> </span> <div><div class="juicebox-parent"> <div id="node--146761--field-news-slideshow--rss" class="juicebox-container"> <noscript> <!-- Image gallery content for non-javascript devices --> <p class="jb-image"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/large_image/public/2024-04/75caf117-e50b-d5ec-7e5c-cf6633983112.jpg?itok=BvRjbOkD" alt="" title="Nicole Travis, Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity" class="img-fluid" /> <br/> <span class="jb-title">Nicole Travis, Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity</span><br/> <span class="jb-caption"></span> </p> </noscript> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>Mayor Jane Castor today announced the coming departure of our Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity, Nicole Travis. The two suspects approached the front passenger side of the car where the victim was seated and tried to rob him of marijuana. As the driver of the vehicle began to drive away, Clemons and Wilson both fired several rounds into the vehicle, striking the passenger twice. </p> <p>The victims fled the area before stopping at a nearby residence and calling 911. Officers responded to the residence and located the passenger who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle was not hurt.</p> <p>Detectives developed leads and, through investigative means, were able to positively identify Clemons and Wilson as the suspects. Within hours of the shooting, officers apprehended Clemons at his residence and took him into custody without incident. Just before 10:00 pm, Wilson was located at his residence and was also arrested without incident. The two firearms used in the incident were recovered by investigators. </p> <p>“Juveniles who use a gun and commit a crime will face adult consequences and are mistaken if they believe they will not be held accountable,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “I am thankful that the swift actions of our officers led to the arrest of these individuals and the recovery of the firearms involved before another member of our community could be injured.”</p> <p>Tarivus Clemons was charged with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery Great Bodily Harm or Deadly Weapon, Carrying Concealed Firearm, Shooting into a Vehicle, and Minor in Possession of a Firearm.</p> <p>Armontae Wilson was charged with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery Great Bodily Harm or Deadly Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Firearm, Minor In Possession of a Firearm, Shooting Into a Vehicle, and Violation of Probation.</p> <p>This remains an active investigation as detectives work to determine how the juveniles came to possess the firearms. </p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-03-28T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">03/28/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-tampa-police" hreflang="en">News Tampa Police</a></div> </div> Thu, 28 Mar 2024 17:41:52 +0000 Verliz Williams p93571 (Police Department) 146371 at https://www.tampa.gov Check Out Tampa's New Economic Dashboard https://www.tampa.gov/news/2024-03/check-out-tampas-new-economic-dashboard-146366 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Check Out Tampa&#039;s New Economic Dashboard</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Robert L. </span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-03-28T13:01:32-04:00" title="Thursday, March 28, 2024 - 01:01 pm" class="datetime">Thu, 03/28/2024 - 01:01 pm</time> </span> <div><div class="juicebox-parent"> <div id="node--146366--field-news-slideshow--rss" class="juicebox-container"> <noscript> <!-- Image gallery content for non-javascript devices --> <p class="jb-image"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/large_image/public/2024-03/195eb4c9-a2c0-fc6a-5f8e-8ba96274af06.jpg?itok=YY7gOmsL" alt="" title="Check Out Tampa&#039;s New Economic Dashboard" class="img-fluid" /> <br/> <span class="jb-title">Check Out Tampa&#039;s New Economic Dashboard</span><br/> <span class="jb-caption"></span> </p> </noscript> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>A snapshot of Tampa's evolving and growing economy is now available at the click of a button. The City of Tampa has launched its first interactive online tool where stakeholders can view the general economic environment of the region in real-time.</p> <p>Over the past decades, Tampa has experienced transformational changes and exponential population growth. The economy is expanding and diversifying thanks to the strong partnerships between the private and public sectors, including developers, hospital systems, universities, the Chambers of Commerce, the Economic Development Council, and other stakeholders. Each year thousands of new businesses are opening their doors and workers across industries are finding opportunities for career advancement. Continuously ranking high in all kinds of "best of" lists, including in the 2023 edition of TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Cities, Tampa is in the national and international spotlight.</p> <p>"From our strengths to our weaknesses -- that is what we want our new Economic Dashboard to show," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Our staff is excited to have this tool at their fingertips to assist in our decision-making and we believe other local governments, business organizations, foundations, and community groups will find it useful, too."</p> <p>The Economic Dashboard utilizes nine reliable private and publicly available data sources such as the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as others that require a paid subscription (for example, Dealroom, Alignable, JLL, Dewey Data, Lightcast, Data Axle, and Safegraph). </p> <p>“Our city’s remarkable evolution inevitably presents complex challenges,” said Nicole Travis, Tampa’s Development and Economic Opportunity Administrator. “In being transparent with these data points, users will find a clear picture of the state of Tampa’s economy – from population demographics, rent-burden on small businesses, poverty levels and consumer spending.”</p> <p>The dashboard is free and can be accessed by computer or phone by visiting <a href="/economy">tampa.gov/economy</a>.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-03-28T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">03/28/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-development-economic-opportunity" hreflang="en">News Development &amp; Economic Opportunity</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-general" hreflang="en">News General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-mayor-office" hreflang="en">News Mayor Office</a></div> </div> Thu, 28 Mar 2024 17:01:32 +0000 Robert Lockridge dp9q (Technology & Innovation) 146366 at https://www.tampa.gov City of Tampa Releases Detailed Plan to Address Housing Needs and Future Goals https://www.tampa.gov/news/2024-03/city-tampa-releases-detailed-plan-address-housing-needs-and-future-goals-146241 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">City of Tampa Releases Detailed Plan to Address Housing Needs and Future Goals</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Robert L. </span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2024-03-26T08:41:53-04:00" title="Tuesday, March 26, 2024 - 08:41 am" class="datetime">Tue, 03/26/2024 - 08:41 am</time> </span> <div><div class="juicebox-parent"> <div id="node--146241--field-news-slideshow--rss" class="juicebox-container"> <noscript> <!-- Image gallery content for non-javascript devices --> <p class="jb-image"> <img src="/sites/default/files/styles/large_image/public/2024-03/e25aaef6-358f-e3ec-efcc-0638b889be31.jpg?itok=3Ttm_GJ9" alt="" title="City of Tampa Releases Detailed Plan to Address Housing Needs and Future Goals" class="img-fluid" /> <br/> <span class="jb-title">City of Tampa Releases Detailed Plan to Address Housing Needs and Future Goals</span><br/> <span class="jb-caption"></span> </p> </noscript> </div> </div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>As housing affordability remains a top issue for residents and those hoping to move to the area, the City of Tampa is taking major steps to address long-term housing development and preservation. With historic levels of investment from the City of Tampa and the Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), more than $82 million in funding will be put toward making Tampa more affordable for renters and homeowners.<br />  <br /> Nearly 40 percent of Tampa residents are housing cost-burdened, meaning more than 30 percent of their monthly gross income goes toward paying for housing.<br />  <br /> The Tampa Housing Implementation Plan identifies the gap in Tampa’s housing supply, examines what steps have been taken to address the housing shortage, and lays out Tampa’s housing affordability and how to achieve them.<br />  <br /> As we better understand Tampa’s unique housing landscape, Tampa City Council has set forth five goals: expand temporary housing options, prioritize seniors and those with disabilities, ensure safe housing for low-income residents, leverage City resources to fill the gaps in funding, and stabilize neighborhoods vulnerable to displacement. These goals will be addressed through investing more money to support the creation of affordable places to live, as well as land use changes to support housing for all Tampa residents over the long-term.<br />  <br /> “If we do not act on today’s affordability challenges with a strong response, these issues will linger and intensify,” said Nicole Travis, the City of Tampa’s Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity. “We want to continue to be the city that offers both an affordable lifestyle and exceptional economic opportunities. Housing affordability is an economic imperative, impacting the strength and resilience of our community.”<br />  <br /> To learn more about how the City of Tampa will continue to address the housing crisis, including short-term program plans and funding allocations, visit <a href="https://www.tampa.gov/deo/2024-housing-implementation-plan">https://www.tampa.gov/deo/2024-housing-implementation-plan</a>.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-posted-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Posted</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2024-03-26T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">03/26/2024</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-collection field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-city-council" hreflang="en">News City Council</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-development-economic-opportunity" hreflang="en">News Development &amp; Economic Opportunity</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-general" hreflang="en">News General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news-group/news-housing-and-community-development" hreflang="en">News Housing and Community Development</a></div> </div> Tue, 26 Mar 2024 12:41:53 +0000 Robert Lockridge dp9q (Technology & Innovation) 146241 at https://www.tampa.gov
