Tampa Police Charge Four Suspects Following Pursuit Verliz W. Tue, 04/23/2024 - 12:46 pm

On April 22, 2024, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers in an unmarked unit observed a 2020 Nissan Rogue traveling westbound on E Hanna Ave approaching N 43rd St driving recklessly at a high rate of speed.

As officers attempted to get closer to the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle came to a stop, and occupants of the vehicle fired several shots toward officers prior to officers activating their emergency lights. The vehicle then fled again at a high rate of speed.

Officers did not return fire, but engaged in a brief pursuit as a result of the suspects having no regard for the lives of others. The pursuit quickly ended in the area of N 53rd St and Nancy St where the vehicle crashed into bushes. Five suspects fled, three of whom fled into a residence located in the 7600 block of Sharon Dr.

With assistance from our K-9 Unit, officers were able to quickly apprehend the suspects and take them into custody.

As a result of the incident, 20-year-old Tyce Hunter (10/06/2003), 21-year-old Jaden Roberts (08/15/2002), and 20-year-old Jerdavius Stubbs (03/01/2004) were all charged with One Felony Count of Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling and One Misdemeanor Count of Resisting Officer Without Violence. 21-year-old Jamariq Travan (11/08/2002) was charged with One Felony Count of Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.

“What our officers encountered last night is another stark reminder of the dangers of working in law enforcement and I’m fortunate that each of them was able to go home to their families,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Their swift action in apprehending the suspects is another example of our unwavering dedication to keeping our city and its residents safe.”

The investigation is still ongoing and additional charges may follow.

Tampa Police Detectives are asking the community for assistance in identifying those responsible for the shooting death of 14-year-old Jevario Buie.

On Wednesday, April 17th, just after 3:30 pm, officers responded to reports of gunfire near the 1400 block of W. Busch Blvd. Upon arrival, they found Jevario near the railroad tracks between Busch Blvd. and Rome Ave., where he died from his injuries.

"This is a senseless tragedy that has taken a young life," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "Jevario's family is heartbroken, and our detectives are working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice. We are asking the community to come forward with any information they may have. Even the smallest detail could be crucial in solving this case and finding justice for Jevario’s family."

In an effort to generate leads, Jevario's family has authorized the release of his information and photographs. Detectives are hopeful that someone with information about the shooting will come forward to aid in the investigation. The family is also requesting privacy as they navigate this difficult time.

On April 19, 2024, less than 24 hours after the incident occurred, Tampa Police arrested 38-year-old Nicholas Harrison Jr. (H/M), in connection with the death of the 27-year-old victim (B/M).

At approximately 3:57 a.m. on April 19, 2024, Tampa Police began investigating a fatal vehicle vs. moped crash.

The investigation revealed that the suspect was driving a 2007 Dodge Charger and was traveling eastbound on E. Hillsborough Ave. The victim, who was also traveling eastbound, was driving a moped. Both the defendant and victim were traveling in the inside lane when Harrison’s vehicle struck the rear of the victim’s moped. Harrison fled the scene and continued traveling eastbound on E. Hillsborough Ave with the moped lodged in the front bumper of his vehicle. The moped eventually dislodged and was located less than a mile away from the scene.

Upon their arrival, officers located the victim on scene, where he was later pronounced deceased.

At approximately 6:00 p.m., Harrison turned himself in at the Tampa Police District 3 office.

Harrison was transported to Orient Road Jail and charged with One Felony Count of Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Death.

The Tampa Police Department reminds the community to stay on scene when involved in a crash. Once you leave the scene, you may face criminal charges, especially if the crash results in serious injury or death.

Tampa Police are investigating a crash at the intersection of E. Busch Blvd. and N. Nebraska Ave. that involved a Tampa Police vehicle and injured a 16-year-old pedestrian.

On April 19, 2024, at approximately 9:17 p.m., officers were responding to the call of a reported armed and dangerous subject at the Family Dollar located in 1700 block of E. Busch Blvd.

While responding to the scene, Officer David Ziegler, a ten-year veteran of the department, was traveling eastbound on Busch Blvd. crossing N. Nebraska Ave with a green light, as confirmed by a witness. The pedestrian, a 16-year-old black male, was attempting to cross southbound when the police vehicle and pedestrian collided. An additional witness informed investigators that the pedestrian was attempting to cross against the traffic signal at the time.

Officer Ziegler immediately stopped and began to render aid to the pedestrian.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken knee and broken nose.

"Pedestrian safety is one of our department's highest priorities," said Chief Lee Bercaw. "One of our goals is to ensure that roadways are used safely by all those who walk, bike, or drive on them. We will increase our educational outreach regarding roadway safety in our ongoing efforts to reduce traffic related incidents in the City of Tampa."

Incident Date/Time: April 18, 2024 at 11:40 PM

Location: Busch Blvd / N. 50th St.

On April 18, 2024, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the driver of a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, later /identified as 34-year-old Vincent Oliver (B/M 7/19/1989), was traveling eastbound on Busch Blvd near N 50^th St when he struck the 23-year-old victim (W/M) who was attempting to cross outside the designated crosswalk. Oliver immediately fled the scene.

Upon their arrival, officers located the victim, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Oliver’s vehicle came to a rest near a convenience store where he fled again, this time on foot. With assistance from Air Service, K-9, and other Patrol Units, Oliver was located hiding underneath a nearby vehicle approximately one mile away from the scene.

Oliver was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital after telling officers he had ingested narcotics and was exhibiting erratic behavior.

Following medical discharge, Oliver was transported to Orient Road Jail where he was charged with One Misdemeanor Count of Resisting Officer Without Violence, One Felony Count of DUI Manslaughter Leaving the Scene, One Felony Count of Leaving the Scene of the a Crash with Death, One Felony Count of Driving While License Canceled, Suspended, or Revoked (Death or Serious Bodily Injury).

In 2022, the City of Tampa was awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), a component of the Office of Justice Programs, to develop and implement a Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative. The City of Tampa is excited to announce the second phase of this three-year grant initiative focused on addressing gun violence and supporting youth in the community. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Tampa, the University of South Florida (USF), and Safe & Sound Hillsborough.

"The safety of our community is our top priority," said Mayor Jane Castor. "This grant allows us to put a thorough plan into practice that addresses both crime reduction and prevention while fostering stronger relationships with our residents. I am confident that through collaboration with TPD, community partners, and social service providers, we can ensure Tampa remains one of the safest cities of our size in the nation."

The grant is a three-year program, currently in its second year. The first year was a planning year, a requirement of the grant, when TPD worked directly with DOJ to develop and finalize the initiative implementation plan. Now with BJA approval of the City’s plan, the implementation phase will empower TPD to employ its comprehensive policing philosophy in alignment with the four pillars of the department: Community-Oriented Policing, Crime Reduction, Quality Assurance, and Wellness.

“The Tampa Police Department constantly looks for new approaches and resources to keep our community safe. This proactive approach has paid off with this grant to focus on tackling violent crime and the social issues that fuel it,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “This grant is another opportunity to expand our community-oriented policing efforts and continue working with partners to make Tampa safer, together.”.

Safe & Sound Hillsborough plays a crucial role by offering case management services to break the cycle of recidivism and connect individuals with essential resources.

“This is a great opportunity”, added Freddy Barton, Executive Director of Safe & Sound Hillsborough. “From a programmatic viewpoint, this grant will allow us to work directly with deep-end youth and their families, provide support for victims of gun violence, expand wraparound services through community partners, and provide sponsorship and funding support for neighborhood and community groups; all to promote safety, reduce recidivism and further improve relationships between law enforcement and community.”

Key goals of the initiative will include addressing youth and community gun violence, working with youth (ages 10-17) and their families involved in gun crimes, partnering with local organizations to provide wraparound services for at-risk youth, and offering support to victims and families of victims of gun violence

Local non-profits, faith-based groups, and mentoring organizations are encouraged to apply for sub-recipients of grant funding. These sub-recipients will be required to provide critical services such as:

Case Management
Youth Development
Counseling
Educational Support
Vocational Support
Mentoring
Long-Term Sustainability

The City has partnered with USF as a research partner for the grant, tasked with collecting and analyzing data to track the progress of the Violence Reduction Strategy. USF will also be responsible for the overall program evaluation to measure efficacy and provide recommendations for the long-term sustainability of the project.

The City of Tampa and the Tampa Police Department are committed to working together with the community to create a safer and secure environment, and improved quality of life for all residents. The implementation phase of this grant award represents a significant step forward in achieving that goal.

Tampa Police continue to investigate an incident at 11201 McKinley Dr.

Just after 3:30 pm on Wednesday, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) staff received a call from a male who stated he was in the parking lot, threatened to have a bomb, and was also making suicidal statements. He also stated plans to drive his car into the building and hurt people.

Tampa Police officers arrived quickly. When they approached the vehicle, the man put a gun to his head. As officers attempted to engage the subject in conversation, he shot himself. Suspicious items, including wires, were observed in the car. The Tampa Police Bomb Team was dispatched to assess the situation.

The Tampa Police Bomb Team is still on scene, continuing their careful and methodical search of the vehicle. During the preliminary vehicle search, officers located two firearms, multiple high capacity magazines, as well as multiple containers of gasoline.

"This clearly had the potential for an even more tragic outcome. Detectives will be working to determine the motives that led to this person's actions," said Chief Bercaw. "In the face of danger, our officers valiantly attempted to encourage this man to see an alternate path for himself. Instead, he died of suicide as the officers actively worked to avoid that result for him. Now the brave members of our Bomb Team will work diligently to ensure no additional threats remain."

This continues to be an active and ongoing investigation. The deceased is a white male in his early 60s. Next of kin notification is pending. Updates can be provided as they become available.

“Bank jugging” is a term used when criminals target people who withdraw cash from banks or ATMs. These criminals watch for individuals leaving with bank envelopes or bags, then follow them to steal the money.

The Tampa Police Department is investigating a bank jugging theft that occurred on the afternoon of Friday, April 5th, 2024.

The suspect, who can be seen in this video, followed the victim from a bank on W. Kennedy Blvd. after the victim withdrew money. The victim then parked at a nearby restaurant in the 2100 block of W. Kennedy Blvd.

The suspect broke into the victim's truck through the front passenger window and stole the cash, which had been left in the center console.

The suspect appears to be a black male, approximately 18-25 years old, with pierced ears. He has a medium build, short black hair, and can be seen wearing a blue disposable mask, white hoodie, and yellow & black gloves. He was seen driving a white Kia Sportage.

Tampa Police Detectives are working with their counterparts at the Houston (TX) Police Department as they believe the suspect may be part of a group that travels between the Houston and Tampa Bay areas committing similar crimes.

The Tampa Police Department is encouraging the community to be aware of their surroundings and take precautions to avoid becoming a bank jugging victim. Some safety tips include:

Not displaying large sums of cash in public.
Varying your routine when visiting a bank.
Being alert for suspicious individuals loitering around banks.
Depositing large sums of cash promptly.
Considering the use of a night deposit box.
If followed, drive to a well-lit, populated location, and call the police.

Tampa Police Detectives are currently investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of an adult white male in his early 40s.

Just before 2:00 am on Monday, April 15, 2024, Tampa Police responded to the report of a shooting in the 6500 block of Julie St. Officers arrived to find the victim with upper body trauma. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries. Next of kin notification is pending.

While early in the investigation, this does not appear to be a random act. Detectives are gathering evidence and developing leads in the case. Updates can be provided as they become available.

In the ongoing effort to enhance Tampa’s urban tree canopy, the City of Tampa is excited to host the third annual Mayor Jane’s Tree Giveaway tomorrow, when 500 free trees will be distributed to community members.

Tampa residents will receive up to two free trees during Mayor Jane’s Tree Giveaway, which takes place Saturday, April 13 from 9-11 a.m. Residents can choose from among six species (each is a 3-gallon tree) while supplies last.

"Tampa prides itself on a world-class urban tree canopy, but we must continue to do everything we can to protect and replenish it,” Mayor Jane Castor said. "You can help us by taking home a tree or two."

In April 2023, Mayor Castor announced a goal of 30,000 newly planted trees by 2030 – about 5,000 trees a year.

Last week, the City of Tampa finalized receipt of $1 million grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Urban and Community Forestry initiative. The City will use the grant to plant and maintain trees, combat extreme heat, and improve access to natural areas.

"We gave away or made available 1,000 trees in 2022 and 2023," Castor said. "After today's 500 are distributed, we will work closely with neighborhood associations and community partners to deploy the other 500 trees throughout the year."

Pre-registration is now closed. There will be limited day-of registration slots open on-site.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Residents must live within City of Tampa limits to be eligible for up to two free trees per household; and must be prepared to show proof of residency.
Residents must also come prepared to safely transport a 5- to 8-foot tall tree in their vehicles. Staff will be on-site to help load trees. Residents are asked to arrive prepared with a blanket covering the bed of their car/truck where the tree will be loaded.

Southern Live Oak — Mature height: 60-80 feet | Mature spread: 60-120 feet
Red Maple — Mature height: 60-75 feet | Mature spread: 25-35 feet
Longleaf Pine — Mature height: 60 -25 feet | Mature spread: 30-40 feet
Simpson Stopper — Mature height: 20-30 feet | Mature spread: 15-20 feet
Yaupon Holly — Mature height: 15-25 feet | Mature spread: 15-20 feet
Red Mulberry — Mature height: 15-70 feet | Mature spread: 35-40 feet

Tree species will be available while supplies last and residents will choose their tree species on-site.

This event is hosted by the City of Tampa's Parks & Recreation Department and the City's office of Sustainability & Resilience. This initiative is powered by Mayor Jane Castor's Transforming Tampa's Tomorrow vision.

A model showing Fair Oaks' planned 33,055-square-foot recreation center.

City officials, Skanska representatives, and dozens of passionate community members will attend the ceremonial groundbreaking for the transformation of Fair Oaks Park.

The $34.7-million project, approved by Tampa City Council last month, will be one of the largest projects undertaken in the Parks and Recreation Department portfolio. The centerpiece is a 33,055-square-foot center, with space dedicated to seniors, classrooms, and an indoor basketball court. Additionally, the building boasts a large collection of solar panels to cut energy costs.

"Fair Oaks Park has served the community for generations, but it is small, outdated, and long overdue for a complete overhaul," said Mayor Jane Castor. "Once we are done, East Tampa will be home to one of the city's most magnificent parks, serving the young and the young at heart."

The full East Tampa Recreation Complex covers 10.25 acres and will include one outdoor basketball court and two outdoor pickleball courts, a multipurpose sports field, 1.5 miles of walking trails and 26 benches.

The Herbert D. Carrington Sr. Community Lake will get a lighted aerator, and there also will be a fenced-in playground with fully inclusive play elements.

“The new Fair Oaks Park will be a generational victory for the community and for the City of Tampa," said Council Member Gwendolyn Henderson. "East Tampa has had a series of extraordinary investments, like the City Center at Hanna Avenue, The Skills Center, and other impactful projects that are spurring the economy and uplifting the community. Fair Oaks Park keeps this momentum going and we could not be more excited for the bright future that lies ahead."

The new recreation center is expected to open in Fall 2025, and the entire complex is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2026. The current center on the north end of the property will remain open until the new building, on the south end, opens.

The Tampa Police Department is deeply concerned about gun violence, especially when young members of our community are involved. Although there was an overall decrease in juvenile-related gun crime between 2022 and 2023, those involved with guns are at a significantly higher risk of injury or death, both to themselves and others. These incidents not only endanger the lives of innocent people but also represent a troubling national trend that we are committed to addressing in our hometown. Juveniles are more likely to make impulsive decisions and lack the experience to handle firearms safely. Additionally, the presence of a gun in a volatile situation can quickly escalate to tragedy, as evident on the night of October 29, 2023, and again on April 9, 2024.

While the Tampa Police Department is dedicated to arresting those involved in gun crimes, preventing these incidents from happening in the first place should be a shared goal for every member of our community. Reducing access to guns from those who should not have them is a focus of our PROJECT: Locked & Unloaded program, which provides free gun locks to responsible gun owners. In 2023, Tampa Police recovered almost 2,000 guns from the street. In the same year, 79% of all auto burglaries were to vehicles that were left unlocked. From those unlocked vehicles, 197 guns were stolen.

The Tampa Police Department focuses on reducing crime and building relationships with community members and is equally committed to building trust and positive relationships with young people through educational programs, mentorship initiatives, and community events. Access to youth-focused outlets and mentorship include our School Resource Officer program, Bigs in Blue, Police Athletic League (PAL), Resources in Community Hope (RICH) House program, the TPD Youth Academy, the TPD Police Explorer program, the Chief’s Youth Advisory Council, and “Stay & Play”, our partnership program with the City of Tampa Parks & Recreation Department.

We need the help of our community to further reduce, and ultimately prevent, gun crimes from occurring. We urge parents, guardians, role models, and mentors to secure firearms safely and keep them out of the reach of minors. Talk openly with your children about the dangers of guns and be aware of your child's activities and social circles. Report any suspicious activity to the police before there is a chance for violence to escalate.

The safety of our community is our top priority. Law enforcement, parents, educators, social service providers, and all members of the community can create a safer environment for our youth, and, in the end, we will make Tampa safer, together.

Incident Date/Time: Approximately 4:08 p.m. on April 9, 2024

Incident Location: 1900 block of N. Ola Ave

On April 9, 2024, at approximately 4:08 p.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of N. Ola Avenue following reports of multiple shots fired outside Stones Throw Restaurant, an establishment near Armature Works.

Upon their arrival, officers located three victims: Victim 1, a 47-year-old female who suffered a gunshot wound in the arm, Victim 2, a 28-year-old female who suffered a gunshot wound to her ankle, and Victim 3, a 36-year-old female who was grazed by a bullet. Victims 1 and 2 were transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Victim 3 was treated on scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, two groups of teen males between the ages of 13 and 17 were near Stones Throw Restaurant, when they engaged in a verbal altercation that quickly escalated when multiple rounds were fired. Following the altercation, both groups fled the scene. One of the subjects involved self-transported to a local hospital after sustaining a non-life threatening wound to his leg. This individual is believed to be affiliated with one of the groups involved in the dispute.

Based on witness accounts and current evidence, an individual from each group exchanged gunfire with one other.

Determining if the firearms used in the incident were stolen is part of the ongoing investigation. Detectives have identified persons of interest and are actively following up on leads provided to them by local businesses and community members to identify the additional individuals in both groups.

“It is disheartening that yet again our community has to deal with senseless gun violence,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “The lack of concern for the safety of others is not only alarming but disappointing because an incident of this nature does not reflect the true community within the City of Tampa. Together, we can work towards limiting the number of firearms juveniles have access to by properly securing firearms and locking vehicle doors.”

Tampa Water Department’s New Engineering Construction Crew Saves Money as Infrastructure Costs Rise

For the first time in the Tampa Water Department's history, a construction team has been formed as a proactive approach to combat soaring construction costs. As the city works to complete critical infrastructure work, the new Engineering Construction Crew, is helping the city save money while also helping projects move along faster.

Since the pandemic, labor and material costs have increased drastically, putting a strain on funding. With the addition of the Engineering Construction Crew, the Tampa Water Department can complete a variety of infrastructure work in-house. This allows the department to have more oversight on the construction process, and ultimately complete the work at a fraction of what it would cost to hire a third-party contractor.

The highly skilled nine-person team is responsible for completing a variety of projects, from installing water meters to extending water mains. Since the crew began working in late 2023, the team has saved more than $400,000 in construction costs.

“The City of Tampa is dedicated to revitalizing our water infrastructure and providing the best possible service to our customers,” said Mayor Jane Castor. “This team will enable us to complete more projects quickly and efficiently, stretching our dollars to the best extent possible.”

In addition to reducing construction costs, the team will also:

Help with the City’s affordable housing goal by connecting housing developments to utility services quicker and cheaper.
Expedite the completion of construction projects.
Give the Tampa Water Department more oversight on specific infrastructure work.

Team members have a combined 90 years of experience in their field, as well as direct experience working on city infrastructure projects.

Community Invited to Water Conservation Fair at City Center Tomorrow

Faced with an ongoing rain deficit, Tampa is kicking off “Water Conservation Month” with a community fair aimed at reducing customers’ water use. The Tampa Water Department’s water conservation and outreach team will host a water conservation celebration outside the City Center at Hanna Avenue on Friday which all community members are invited.

Participants will walk away with free water-saving devices, easy-to-follow tips, and a chance to win Florida-native plants.

Conserving water is especially crucial now. Last year, Tampa had to purchase water from Tampa Bay Water twice and like the rest of Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties, was put under the Modified Phase One Water Restrictions which limit irrigation to once-a-week. Thanks in part to the water conservation and outreach team’s efforts, water demand in the City is down more than 6 million gallons a day (MGD) since the once-a-week watering restrictions went into effect in December. Florida homeowners use, on average, 991 gallons of water every time they irrigate. Excessive irrigation is one of the leading water usage problems, and in many cases, accounts to up to 50% of a household's water use.

On average, the city consumes about 82 million gallons a day, with each individual consuming approximately 100 gallons a day.

“Conserving water is crucial to the future of Tampa,” said Rory Jones, Tampa Water Department Director. “Through action and education, we can reduce our water demand and ensure our water resources will last for generations to come.”

The department’s water conservation and outreach team actively works to reduce water use and protect our water resources all year round. Team members provide a variety of services to Tampa Water Department customers including:

Irrigation Evaluations: In 2023, the team performed approximately 160 irrigation evaluations at homes across the City of Tampa. On average, these one-on-one irrigation evaluations resulted in water savings of more than 9,000 gallons per household per month.
Indoor Water Conservation Kits: Giving customers the tools they need to reduce their water use is crucial. Last year, team members distributed more than 1,150 indoor water conservation kits, which include leak detection tablets, shower heads, and water conservation information. Kits were linked to an average water savings of more than 2,900 gallons of water per residential household per month.
Water Wise Rebates: The Tampa Water Department participates in the regional Tampa Bay Water Wise Rebate program. Last year, more than 190 residential customers received rebates for making water-efficient upgrades to their homes, like buying an EPA WaterSense-certified toilet.

In addition to today’s water conservation celebration, team members regularly participate in community events, speak at neighborhood meetings and schools, as well as hold regular workshops. Education and outreach are essential to helping community members see the benefits of reducing water use.

Mayor Jane Castor today announced the coming departure of our Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity, Nicole Travis. Travis, who has been in the leadership role since January 2022, will transition to start her own consulting firm based in Tampa.

During her tenure at the City of Tampa, Travis contributed to Mayor Castor’s Transforming Tampa Tomorrow “T3” Initiative, including housing affordability and development. Under her leadership, Travis’ contributions included adding over $4 billion in development value to the City of Tampa, advocating and securing $100M for affordable housing, the creation of Tampa’s Economic Dashboard, and the completion of the $38 million renovation of the Tampa Convention Center. She was also fundamental to the acquisition of Memorial Park Cemetery, one of the oldest African-American cemeteries in Tampa.

“I am immensely grateful for the trust and support I have received from the City of Tampa team during my time as Administrator,” Travis said. “As much as I love this role, I am excited about this transition and the flexibility it would afford me with my young family. I remain committed to the success of the Mayor, her team, and the lasting impact I know this Administration’s projects will carry into future generations. I have every confidence in the DEO team to sustain the momentum of our projects and initiatives that will catalyze transformation in Tampa.”

Her last day as a city employee is July 1.

"I am so sorry to see a tremendous public servant like Nicole leave our City government but wholeheartedly support her decision to shift into consulting after nearly two decades of dedicated public service, allowing her more time with her family. A stretch of S. Manhattan Avenue experiences frequent and dangerous street flooding.

With April showers on the horizon, and just months away from hurricane season, the City of Tampa is grateful to learn U.S. Representative Kathy Castor (FL-14) has secured nearly a million dollars in federal funding to go toward a South Tampa stormwater project.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2024, Mayor Jane Castor will join U.S. Representative Kathy Castor as she announces the $959,752 in federal funding that will help pay for a new stormwater pipe along a portion of South Manhattan Avenue. The highly urbanized residential area currently does not have a stormwater system and experiences frequent and dangerous street flooding.

The Manhattan Stormwater Project consists of a new stormwater pipe, just under a mile long, that will help drain water from the area faster to the basin. It is currently in the design phase and is estimated to cost approximately $11 million. Work is expected to start in late 2024 and be completed in spring 2026
