Bayshore Boulevard Enhancement Project

On September 27, 2012, the City of Tampa provided a 2012 Status Report in regard to the Bayshore Task Force Recommendations 2004 report.

The Bayshore Boulevard project is an enhancement project from north of Gandy Boulevard to Platt Street and will provide for continuous bicycle lanes in both directions by reconfiguring the existing pavement.   The project will also upgrade pedestrian features at existing cross walks, to provide for safer crossings of Bayshore Boulevard, and will also add northbound left turn bays for several locations where turns are currently permitted.  The Design Phase of the project, from West Gandy Boulevard to Platt Street,(construction plans) was completed in the Spring of 2010; however, due to the size of the project and available funding, construction will be completed in three separate phases:

PHASE I - Rome Avenue to Platt Street

  • Construction Start:  March 1, 2011
  • Construction Complete: February 2012
  • Construction Bid Amount: $1,481,000
  • Final Construction Contract Amount: $2,407,780.01

Phase I of the project will provides for continuous 4-foot bicycle lanes in both directions along Bayshore Boulevard between Rome Avenue to Platt Street.  The existing 4-lane roadway, between the Davis Island Bridge and Platt Street, was be modified to provide 4 foot continuous bicycle lanes and a concrete median.  The existing 6-lane roadway, between the Rome Avenue to Davis Island Bridge was be modified to a 4-lane roadway with a 14-foot grassed median and 4 foot bike lanes.  The project will also upgraded the existing traffic signals and enhanced pedestrian features at the intersections of Bay-to-Bay Boulevard and Platt Street.  These enhancements provide for improved safety for pedestrians and bicyclists that utilize Bayshore Boulevard.

Phase II - Rome Avenue to Howard Avenue

  • Anticipated Construction -- 2016/2017
  • From Howard Avenue to Rome Avenue, widening the existing Southbound roadway pavement in the median and modifying pavement markings and signage in the southbound roadway to provide for a 5-foot bicycle lane.  The northbound travel lanes and existing northbound bicycle lane will have no change.

  • Estimated Construction Cost - $660,000

Phase III - Gandy Boulevard To Howard Avenue

  • Anticipated Construction - when funding becomes available
  • From North of Gandy Boulevard to Howard Avenue, widening the existing Southbound roadway pavement in the median and modifying pavement markings and signage in the southbound roadway to provide for a 4 foot bicycle lane.  The northbound travel lanes and existing northbound bicycle lane will have no change.
