Julian B. Lane Public Art

JBL Riverfront Art Open House

West Tampa artist collaborative, Pep Rally, has been commissioned to create artwork that will be installed inside the Julian B. Lane River Center building. The artists would like to hear from the West Tampa community, to shape their vision as they create the artwork.

Who: Pep Rally is a team of professional artists based in West Tampa who are stylistically and culturally diverse, and represent Anglo, African, Caribbean, Irish and Cuban communities.

What: The City of Tampa is currently renovating Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, which is located in West Tampa along the western edge of the Hillsborough River, adjacent to Tampa Preparatory School campus and the West Riverfront Neighborhood. Within the park will be the River Center, which will include a Boat House and Community Center, as well as an interior piece of art, created by Pep Rally. In order to create this artwork, the artists will be hosting open houses to meet members of the community and listen to their stories. These sessions will take place over three separate dates in different locations.

At these sessions, the artists want to hear your story!
- What specific events, locations and times brought people together?
- Are there any culturally significant memories, celebrations, and fond moments that you’d like to share?
- What makes you proud to call West Tampa home?
- Do you have any photographs or objects that you would be willing to share with the artists? If so, please bring them to a workshop and the items will be documented on-site and returned.

When: There will be three separate open houses whereby the community can meet and talk with the artists - all three sessions are the same. If you attend one, it is not necessary to attend the other two.

Wednesday, August 16th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
David Barksdale Senior Citizen Center
1801 North Lincoln Avenue

Thursday, August 24th at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Don’t have time to attend the open house, but are still interested in reaching out to the artists? Kindly email artprograms@tampagov.net and the City of Tampa will connect you to Pep Rally. Please note: these community sessions are for inspiration for the artists and not every story will be literally represented in the artwork.
