The Middle District of Florida is one of the busiest federal district courts in the nation. In FY 2000, over 8,200 civil and criminal cases were filed in Middle Florida. Over 7000 civil cases (ninth highest among all 94 district courts) and nearly 1,200 criminal cases (eleventh highest among all district courts) were filed during FY 2000. The Middle District also had the seventh highest number of criminal trials. In FY 2000, the district had the third highest number of criminal defendants charged with fraud related offenses among all district courts. The Middle District of Florida has been officially designated a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Enforcement Area (HIDTA) by the Department of Justice. The number of annual drug related criminal defendants in the district continues to rank in the top ten percent of all district courts.
