As a result of the Tampa Police Department's recent tragic losses, the administrative staff brought in veteran NBA official Bob Delany to speak on the topic of "Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress for Those Who Serve." Delany is conducting the normally costly sessions free of charge to the Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Delany, a former New Jersey State Trooper who infiltrated the Mafia in the 1970s, will give a morning and afternoon presentation on post-traumatic stress. After serving a key role in a landmark investigation of the Mob, wearing a wire undercover for three years, Delany experience post-traumatic stress disorder. That experience, along with his path to becoming an elite NBA referee, was chronicled in the acclaimed 2008 book, Covert, co-authored by Tampa Bay based journalist/author Dave Scheiber and named a best book of '08 by USA Today.
Delany's NBA career began in 1987 and he continues to add to his officiating portfolio of more than 1,500 regular season games, 150 playoff contests and nine finals. He worked the 1998 All-Star Game and the 1994 opening NBA Games in Yokohama, Japan. He also received the prestigious Gold Whistle Award from the National Association of Sports Officials in 2003.
