On this month’s episode of On Duty With the Tampa Police Department, TPD unveils its new fallen officers’ memorial along with a thin blue light that has a very special meaning. See how the department is honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who risk their lives everyday out on the streets. The men and women in blue are “going green!” Learn how officers and citizens are benefiting from increased bike patrols in local communities. Crimefighters come in all shapes, sizes and sometimes even breeds. Meet the three police canines that recently took an oath to sniff out crime.

This month on Spotlight Tampa, volunteers gathered for Paint Your Heart Out Tampa, an annual community-improvement day that has been taking place since 1987. Viewers learn the benefits of a Florida-friendly yard. A tree planting ceremony took place in downtown Tampa, as part of the City of Tampa Earth Day Celebration. Tampa Fire Rescue held a DUI demonstration to raise student awareness of the dangers of impaired driving. Fans of Foursquare, a popular mobile app with over eight million users, celebrated Foursquare Day at the Sail Pavilion. The Tampa Convention Center is working hard to reduce waste and save energy. Lots of great tales were shared at the annual Tampa-Hillsborough County Storytelling Festival, and the Summer Blast Pass by HART is a safe and inexpensive public ride program for kids 17 and under. On First Look at Tampa’s Redevelopment, we head downtown to check out the new USF Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS). Next, we visit the site of the future Channel District Park, and then stroll over to the Channel District Kennel Club for a tail-wagging good time at the new members-only K-9 club.
