Amateur Radio Classes Offered

03/18/15
Hillsborough County ARES/RACES is proud to sponsor 2 amateur radio courses: the introductory Amateur Radio "Technician Class" License Course and the General Class license upgrade course, all in a traditional classroom setting.

Please invite your friends to come join the well over 300 people who have taken these courses and earned or upgraded an Amateur Radio license during the last few years. This course will be held on two Saturdays - the 4th and 11th of June, 2011. Both classes will meet at the Hillsborough County Emergency Operations Center, located at 2711 E. Hanna Ave, Tampa, FL 33610. Class will start on both days at 9 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.. On the 11th of June, testing will begin at 3:30 p.m..

The introductory Technician course will be based around the new "ARRL's Tech Q & A, 5th Edition". This book will be available for borrowing at the beginning of the first class. The book associated with this class and available for purchase, for $19.95, is titled "The ARRL Emergency Communications Handbook".
The General Class license upgrade book is the "ARRL's General Q & A, 3rd Edition, 2nd printing". This book will be available for borrowing at the beginning of the first class. The book associated with this class and available for purchase, for $29.95, is titled "The ARRL Operating Manual". This will be the last class taught by HCAR before the change of the question pool!

If you wish to start studying before class, Amateur radio practice tests for license courses are available on-line at http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl. Choose the appropriate exam pool.

There are no actual fees for this class. However, there is a fee of $14 for taking the test, and the books are $19.95 and $29.95 respectively. You will pay for the test and the book at the start of class. Please bring a government-issued picture ID card with you, as well.

The class size is limited – and you can sign up online! In order to properly prepare materials and gauge class sizes, please send an email to training@hcaresraces.org to reserve your seat in this class.

These classes will also provide you an opportunity to participate in one of the largest disaster preparedness exercises in the world – the ARRL Field Day. Further information will be disseminated during class, or by sending an email to events@hcaresraces.org with the subject "Field Day".

If you are unable to attend both sessions of your course, please let us know about that as well - there is some scheduling flexibility for these classes.

Please check www.hcaresraces.org  for information related to these classes, as well as other information related to emergency communications in our area.
