Channel District Projects are Underway -- Groundbreaking to be held for a new park

03/18/15

Mayor Pam Iorio will be joined by business and community leaders for the Channel District Park groundbreaking ceremony. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the corner of East Washington and 12th streets in the Channel District.

The new half-acre Park, designed by WilsonMiller Stantec, will provide decorative walks, landscaping, shade structures, and other park amenities including a dog area. The $815,000 project is funded with property taxes within the Channel District Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). The project has been awarded to New Vista Builders Group, LLC. The anticipated completion date is the end of October 2011.

Immediately adjacent to the park site, the Washington Street Improvements Project is under construction. This $2.5 million project, constructed by CH2MHill as a part of the Utility Capital Improvement Projects (UCAP) program, provides for below ground upgrades to multiple utility systems and above ground streetscape and lighting improvements. Some finish elements of the new streetscape will be visible at the park groundbreaking, and overall completion of this work is expected the second quarter of 2011. The project is also funded by property taxes within the Channel District CRA. Washington Street is the first upgrade project to implement the streetscape standards adopted by the Channel District CRA Action Plan.

Nearby is the recently completed York Street Stormwater Vault. This 491-foot-long stormwater vault, located under York Street, provides a critical first piece in planned stormwater improvements for the Channel District CRA. Funded by property taxes within the Channel District CRA, the $7.9 million project was completed by CH2MHill as a part of the UCAP program.
