Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor visited a local elementary school to recognize the 9-year-old boy who called 911 during a violent home invasion. The chief presented the child with a Certificate of Valor for remaining calm and alert throughout the incident that took place at his Highland Avenue home. The boy was in another room when he saw two men use a gun to force their way inside the house and violently attack his father. He immediately called 911 while the suspects were still inside the house and gave the dispatcher a very detailed description of both suspects. This information helped the responding police officers arrest one suspect right away and identify the second suspect.
At the school, Chief Castor announced that Tampa Police officers and US Marshals deputies arrested the second suspect in Fayetteville, North Carolina. During the investigation, police officers received a tip that Andrew Portugues was travelling by bus to the New York area. Detectives and deputies worked together around the clock to pinpoint Portugues’ location before he reached his final destination. On June 7th at approximately 8:45 p.m., US Marshals deputies intercepted the Greyhound bus that Portugues was on board. The bus was parked at the Fayetteville terminal for a planned stop. Portugues was taken into custody without any further incident and booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center. He is awaiting extradition to Hillsborough County’s Orient Road Jail in Tampa.
