City of Tampa Update #6 – Kennedy Bridge Incident

03/18/15

The drill rig has been removed from Kennedy Bridge. The most dangerous, most difficult part of this effort has been accomplished. Since the afternoon media briefing, the sunken tug boat has also been lifted.

The tug boat and barges still need to be removed from the immediate vicinity of the bridge before FDOT finish their bridge inspection, which should occur tonight. Once FDOT makes a determination as to if and when the bridge can reopen, FDOT will coordinate with the City of Tampa to reopen the Kennedy Boulevard and remove the area detours. FDOT is expected to make that announcement tonight via media alert. (We anticipate this being the final update sent from the City of Tampa.)

The response to the incident at Kennedy Bridge, which resulted in the safe removal of the drill rig today, was a team effort. The City of Tampa would like to thank all the crews and agencies who assisted in this process, and we appreciate the public’s patience over the last 36 hours.
