Detectives Arrest Suspect in Hate Crime

WHERE: 5014 Winnie Street North, Tampa

VICTIM: McDonald, Terrience, 06/24/1990, B/M, 236 Moore Street East, Apartment A, Tampa

SUSPECT: Spencer, Tavares, 01/18/1997, B/M, 3624 Wilder Street East, Tampa

CHARGES: Attempted Murder, Robbery, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon (Enhanced Penalty Hate Crime FSS 775.085)

DETAILS: A week after meeting the victim, the suspect arranged a meeting. They met near the 5000 block of Winnie Street and the suspect pulled out a gun and told the victim to get to the ground. The suspect shot the victim. The victim pretended like he was dead and the suspect walked off. The victim got up and ran from the scene, but the suspect saw him running off and fired another round towards the victim, but did not hit him. Through the investigation, detectives determined that the suspect shot the victim because he was a man who dresses like a woman. Since the motive for the crime was because the victim was a cross dresser, the suspect was charged with a hate crime. Within an hour of the shooting, the suspect was bragging through text messages with defamatory statements about his sexual orientation.
The suspect was notified of his arrest in jail where we was because of previous charges.
