TAMPA, FL (March 14, 2016) – Be a leak detective during Fix-A-Leak Week March 14-20 to solve the mystery of leaky flappers and increasing water costs. Household leaks can waste up to 10 thousand gallons of water annually per household, about the same amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry.

“It’s important to use water efficiently every day,” said Chuck Weber, Water Department Director. “Leaks needlessly diminish our community’s water supply and they waste money. One of the most common causes of leaks is worn toilet flappers. Homeowners can replace old flappers and stop other leaks quickly without much expense.”

Visit for information and instructions on controlling leaks at home and at work. Weber said it is also especially important to check automatic irrigation systems for breaks, missing spray heads and faulty settings because improper irrigation can lead to citations and fines.

Visit to request a free showerhead (plumbing retrofit kit) to increase your home’s water efficiency. Water efficiency devices are also available for commercial and multi-family accounts.
