The spirits of Tampa's past are coming to life again thanks to the Friends of Tampa Recreation, Inc., who have partnered with the Tampa Historical Society, Inc. to sponsor the Gothic Graveyard Tour of historic Oaklawn Cemetery on Sunday, October 30 at 3 p.m.

Oaklawn Cemetery is Tampa's oldest burial ground and final resting place for many early area notables, including 13 mayors, veterans of seven wars, and victims of five yellow fever epidemics. The tour is not intended to be Ā frightening and participants will learn some bizarre facts about the Victorian-era graveyard and its inhabitants. Tampa historian Maureen Patrick will appear in elaborate nineteenth century mourning attire in the character of Miss Prudence Fipwhistle (born 1855, died 1899) telling stories of Tampa's most notorious and prominent citizens, religious customs and taboos, and Civil War History. A $5 donation is requested, which will benefit Tampa Historical Society, Inc.

Because of its historical significance, Oak Lawn Cemetery was recently designated historic landmark within the City of Tampa.

The Oaklawn Cemetery is located at 600 E. Harrison Street. Reservations for the tour are not required. Please arrive at least 5 minutes early. For more information, please call (813) 831-5214 or email
