Assistant Chief Marc Hamlin stands with Master Patrol Officer Randy Lopez at the ASIS Law Enforcement Appreciation Luncheon on May 19, 2011.
A suicidal man's life was saved thanks to Master Patrol Officer Randy Lopez's selfless and quick action. On August 1, 2010 at approximately 9 am, a distraught man parked his vehicle on the Courtney Campbell Causeway Bridge. Officers arrived and started talking to the man to keep him from jumping off of the Bridge. A Tampa Police Marine Unit arrived to assist the officers who were on land. When the man spotted the police boat he jumped off the bridge in an attempt to kill himself. He struck the water after a 90-foot fall. Master Patrol Officer Randy Lopez quickly jumped out of the police boat and swam towards the man. The man survived the fall, but he was still acting irrationally. He started diving underwater in an effort to drown himself.
MPO Lopez grabbed the man and restrained him in the water. He towed him back to the police boat and secured him inside.
MPO Lopez’s actions on this day represent the highest standards within the Tampa Police Department for the preservation of life. The personal risk to MPO Lopez’s safety was grave, making this rescue no less than remarkable.
