Tampa Police are investigating a police shooting in which a carjacking suspect was shot by a police officer after the suspect made threatening statements and gestures.

The suspect was struck in the wrist and hip, and is in the hospital in stable condition.

The carjacking occurred near Tampania and Kennedy Boulevard at approximately
11:29 a.m. The victim reported that a man struck him and stole his car. An officer responded.

After a brief pursuit of approximately one block, the suspect stopped his stolen vehicle near Union Street and Delaware Avenue, where he exited his vehicle and confronted the officer. The suspect reached behind his back and then returned to the vehicle. When the suspect again left the vehicle, making movements the officer considered threatening, the officer fired, striking the suspect in the wrist and hip.

It is unclear at this time whether the suspect was armed. The officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is routine in such cases. The investigation continues. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
