Incident: Traffic Crash

Location: N. 22 St and E Cayuga

At approximately 9:30 pm District III Patrol Officers responded to a traffic crash that involved two vehicles. It was reported that one of the vehicles was on fire and the occupant was trapped inside the car.
Numerous patrol officers responded in priority mode to the scene. A 1994 Monte Carlo was on fire with an unconscious occupant trapped inside. As the officers attempted to remove the trapped individual from the burning vehicle they used fire extinguishers in an attempt to extinguish the fire. As the fire continued to grow the officers had to forcibly pull the individual from the burning vehicle.
As a result of the officers heroic effort in removing the individual from the fully engulfed vehicle they saved his life. The individual sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Six Tampa Police Officers suffered from smoke inhalation and received treatment at Tampa General Hospital. A seventh officer that was involved did not request medical treatment. The officers were released back to full duty.
The involved officers were: Officer S. Purcell, Officer J. Parsons, Officer J.D. Byrne, Officer D. Vinkenmulder, and Officer H. Stevens, Officer A. Seligman, Officer J. Stanjeski.
