Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced that 65 Tampa residents and community leaders will participate in the inaugural Mayor's Neighborhood University. More than 150 applications were received.

"The 150 application we received exceeded my expectations and I am very pleased with the response from the community," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "Strong and healthy neighborhoods need informed and committed leaders, and this program will build the next generation of community activists."

The program kicks-off with class orientation on September 10, 2013, and each of the program’s twelve sessions will be held at a different City of Tampa facility. The class topics range from getting to know government services to empowering community leaders to make a difference in their neighborhood.

Due to the quality of the applications, a second Mayor's Neighborhood University Class consisting of the other applicants will start in early 2014 so that every Tampa resident who applied will have the opportunity to attend.
