Mayor Bob Buckhorn will join community leaders to celebrate the completion of renovations on Roy Jenkins Pool at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 22, 2014. Roy Jenkins Pool is located on 154 Columbia Drive on Davis Island.

Following the ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, the City of Tampa invites all children for a free swim day at the pool on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A City of Tampa recreation card is not required.

"Together with the Davis Islands Civic Association, we have transformed and saved an important historic structure for Davis Islands. I'm eager see it active, with kids swimming and playing in the pool just like they did more than 80 years ago," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

The pool will remain open through Oct 31, 2014. Beginning next year, Roy Jenkins Pool will be open seasonally throughout the summer.

The renovations of the pool include the replacement of the pool operating systems and piping, pool shell, deck, and restrooms. The City of Tampa also renovated the building's historic façade. Pillar Construction Group renovated the pool, which cost $2.25 million. The majority of the funding came from the Community Improvement Tax with $500,000 being contributed by The Davis Island Civic Association.

Roy Jenkins Pool was built in 1928. It closed to the public in 2008 when the pool did not meet public health and safety guidelines; these renovations remedy all public health and safety concerns.
