Mayor Bob Buckhorn will cut the ribbon on the new Springhill Community Center on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 3 p.m. The Springhill Community Center is located at 1000 East Eskimo Avenue.

The community center design includes a gymnasium, warming kitchen, computer classroom, multi-purpose room, splash pad, playground, and a new sports field. It is also home to the Virginia Rivers Creative Arts Studio, which has three classrooms and a high tech performance workshop dedicated to theater and performing arts programs. The studio was named in honor of Virginia Rivers, who was the founder and creative director of the City's award-winning Creative Arts Theater, a professional children’s theater troupe whose mission it is to bring the performing arts to our economically challenged neighborhoods.

In addition to performing arts, the new community center will serve both youth and adults' social, recreational, health, and educational needs through a variety of programs and classes including an after-school program in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa.

Local artist Susan Gott worked with children living in the surrounding neighborhoods to create a blue and white glass mobile, the piece of public art which graces the atrium. The glass sculpture was named "Spring Rain" by the children.

Construction on the $2.5 million Springhill Community Center began in June 2010. The project was funded through Community Investment Tax funds.
