As Easter Sunday approaches, Mayor Jane Castor delivers a message of hope and selflessness to Tampa’s Christian community amid COVID-19. In a video PSA, Mayor Castor wishes a happy Easter to all who celebrate and reminds the local church community of its vital role in “flattening the curve” by developing alternatives to traditional worship service.

“Easter reminds us that hope, faith, and selfless love can shine a light even in the darkest of times,” says Mayor Jane Castor. “While the recognition of Easter will be different this year, we have to practice what’s written in the gospel, to love thy neighbor and encourage each other in faith. And right now, that means celebrating from a distance. While we wish we could honor this holy day in the traditional way, this small sacrifice will bring us even closer together in spirit, while keeping our community safe.”

Many local churches have found innovative ways to host Easter worship service while maintaining social distance, including via online streaming and drive-up sermons.

Mayor Castor also reminds local Christians that the challenges created by the coronavirus provide a unique opportunity to practice selflessness and be a good neighbor. In the face of this uncertain time, Castor asks local Christians to reflect on what they can do to help others in need.

Mayor Jane Castor and the City of Tampa would like to wish all a happy and safe Easter weekend.
