Media Advisory - Photo Opportunity - City of Tampa Holds Annual Citywide Severe Weather Full-scale Exercise
Each year, the City of Tampa holds severe weather full-scale exercises in order to ensure that it is well prepared to respond and recover from a major hurricane making landfall in or near Tampa Bay. The 2015 citywide exercise will occur Tuesday, June 9, 2015.
This year’s drill will focus on Port Tampa Bay, its tenants, and the surrounding residents during a category 3 hurricane. The exercise will help ensure maximum coordination between the City of Tampa and Port Tampa Bay for response and recovery in the event of an actual severe weather event or disaster.
All City of Tampa departments, Port Tampa Bay, and community support partners, such as the Red Cross, will participate in the execution of this exercise; residents in the immediate area will not be affected. The media is invited to learn about the city’s ongoing efforts to train and prepare for severe weather events.
Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward will brief the media at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The media will then be able to shoot b-roll of the EOC. Following that, media will be able to speak with Ocea Lattimore, Director of Assets and Logistics, who during an emergency will coordinate the city’s efforts to clear streets for emergency vehicles. Lattimore will be available at Emergency Response Center 3 at 8:45 a.m., and media will also be able to shoot b-roll of a push team convoy preparing to leave the response center for Port Tampa Bay. Media will not be able to go on premises at Port Tampa Bay.
Emergency drills like this are also a good reminder for residents to sign up for Alert Tampa, the city’s official emergency alert system, to receive time sensitive notifications which will be sent directly by email, cell phone, and in some cases, home phone. To sign up today, visit our website at tampagov.net/alerttampa or call (813) 231-6184.
