TAMPA, FL (March 12, 2015) – “Take 10” during national Fix-A-Leak Week March 16-22, 2015 to find plumbing leaks in and around your home. If you spend just 10 minutes looking for leaks around your home, you could prevent costly water damage to your home. On average, household leaks can waste as much as 10 thousand gallons of water, about the same amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry.

“Don’t risk costly home repairs and high utility bills caused by plumbing leaks, irrigation breaks and running toilets,” said Brad Baird, Public Works and Utility Services Administrator. “Take time during Fix-A-Leak Week to check your property for leaks and plan for repairs.”

It’s especially important to “take 10” and check automatic irrigation systems for leaks, breaks and missing spray heads. A leak just 1/32nd of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month.

If you’re not sure how to check your home for leaks, the Tampa Water Department has the resources that will help you get started. Visit and download a copy of the “Home Water Efficiency Tool Kit.” Or simply call the Water Efficiency and Conservation team at (813) 274-8121, option 5.
