NATION’S PRINCIPALS CREATE OUTDOOR CLASSROOM AT TAMPA SCHOOL

Elementary and middle school principals from around the nation will be putting in sweat equity on April 7 to transform a Tampa elementary school as part of the National Association of Elementary School Principals’ (NAESP) third annual Community Service Day during the Association’s Annual Convention and Exposition.

One-hundred principals will partner with some of their Tampa colleagues to spruce up Booker T. Washington Elementary School (1407 Estelle Street, Tampa, FL 33605), demonstrating their commitment to volunteerism and shaping the long-term impact of school improvement efforts. The Community Service Day is sponsored by NAESP and corporate playground-equipment partner Landscape Structures, with in kind support from Growums.

Booker T. Washington Elementary School is a Title I school located just on the outskirts of Ybor City. Over the past two years, the school overcame tremendous barriers such as low attendance rates, increased referral rates, high suspension rates, and continued teacher turnover. Principal Toynita Martinez, who came on board as principal in 2009, is proud of how the school has made a remarkable turnaround.

“This outdoor classroom has been a long awaited dream,” said Martinez. “To see this project come to life brings joy to my heart because I know that the children will have new learning experiences.”
