Graffiti on the seawall near Kiley Gardens is set to be removed later this month to make way for a permanent art installation along the Kennedy underpass segment of the Tampa Riverwalk as part of Lights on Tampa 2015.

"We want to Tampa Riverwalk to be active and engaging, and highlight Tampa's best natural asset, the Hillsborough River. As part of our effort to create lasting public art projects like this, we are taking advantage of natural and man-made backdrops," said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "The lighting projects on our bridges and soon, on the Riverwalk segment passing under Kennedy Bridge, are a signature for Tampa."

A Lights on Tampa 2015 project, designed by Wannemacher Jensen Architects, will illuminate the seawall as well as the water between the Kennedy segment of the Tampa Riverwalk and the seawall. The project is intended to draw patrons to the River and encourage them to engage with the space around them through motion sensors that change the light color. It will be a permanent installation, paid for by the City of Tampa. To view a rendering, please visit

The total cost for removal of the graffiti is $80,000, with $40,000 in support coming from Friends of the Tampa Riverwalk. Removal is anticipated to begin before the end of August 2014 and is estimated to take between two and three weeks to complete. The transfer of funds to Friends of the Riverwalk goes to Tampa City Council for approval on Thursday, August 7, 2014. Similarly, in spring 2012, crew graffiti was removed on downtown's bridges for "Agua Luces," the artistic illumination project that has become an iconic backdrop for downtown Tampa.

The City of Tampa will pursue anyone who defaces public property by putting graffiti on the downtown bridges or the seawall by Kiley Garden and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park will be fined the amount required for removal.

Lights on Tampa is a public/private partnership between the City of Tampa's Art Programs Division, Public Art Alliance, Sykes, The Radiant Group, Shumaker, Loop, & Kendrick as well as Caspers Company among many other local partners.
